Description


This is a medium-to-large insect taxon belonging to the genus Blaptica that displays highly pronounced sexual dimorphism. Adults typically measure between 1.5 to 1.8 inches (approx. 40 to 45 mm) in length. Males possess fully developed, functional-looking dark brown wings with lighter orange flecks or stripes across the pronotum and abdomen, though they are physically incapable of sustained flight. Conversely, females are brachypterous, retaining only vestigial wing pads that expose their robust, glossy black segmented abdomen adorned with light horizontal bands. Nymphs are wingless and exhibit a highly textured, coppery brown coloration that provides excellent camouflage in the wild.

Geographical distribution: The native distribution of this species is confined to South America, particularly within the humid plains and basins of Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay. However, because it has become an internationally popular live feeder insect for reptiles, amphibians, and arachnids, it is bred in managed colonies worldwide. Wild populations outside its native neotropical range are virtually non-existent due to its high susceptibility to freezing temperatures and sensitivity to prolonged dry spells.

Habitat: It primarily inhabits forest floors, subtropical woodlands, and damp savannahs characterized by warm and humid microclimates. The species is typically found buried beneath leaf litter, decaying logs, loose bark, and rock crevices. It thrives in ambient temperatures ranging from 75 °F to 90 °F (24 °C to 32 °C) and requires relative humidity levels between 50% and 70% to facilitate successful ecdysis (molting) and prevent lethal desiccation of its tracheal system.

Feeding: It functions as an opportunistic detritivore and frugivore, feeding on organic debris. In its natural environment, its diet consists of fallen leaves, overripe fruits, decomposing vegetation, and fungal mycelium. Under managed conditions, they consume a highly varied diet composed of grains, leafy greens, root vegetables, and specialized dry feeds rich in proteins, which they store efficiently as fat reserves, making them highly nutritious prey.

Behavior: This insect is strictly nocturnal and exhibits strong lucifugous behavior, meaning it actively flees from direct light sources. It is a fossorial species, using its spinose legs to burrow deep into loose substrate for safety. Notably, it lacks developed adhesive pads (arolia) on its tarsi, rendering it completely unable to climb vertical smooth surfaces such as glass or polished plastics, a unique physical trait that confines its activity to horizontal terrestrial layers.

Reproduction: This species is ovoviviparous and exhibits a reproductive cycle heavily dependent on ambient temperatures. Following copulation, the female produces an ootheca containing 20 to 40 eggs, which she withdraws into her internal brood pouch for protection and incubation. Gestation lasts approximately 28 to 40 days at 82 °F (28 °C). The neonate nymphs hatch directly from the mother´s body, emerging at around 2 mm in length, and undergo approximately 7 instars over a span of 6 to 9 months to reach adulthood.

Conservation status: It is currently not evaluated (NE) by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Its wild populations in native South American ecosystems are considered stable and secure, while its global captive populations are exceptionally vast. Because it is highly controlled and unable to establish invasive wild populations in temperate or cold climates, it does not pose a conservation threat nor is it threatened itself.
