Exhibiting a wingspan of 90 to 120 millimeters, this striking neotropical lepidopteran stands out within its family due to the complete absence of tails on its hindwings. The dorsal wing surface features a velvety greenish-black or dark brown background, highlighted by a prominent submarginal band of bright yellow or gold spots running across both the forewings and hindwings. The ventral side displays a similar pattern but is distinguished by a series of vibrant red spots near the margins of the hindwings, providing a clear warning signal to predators. The larvae are stout and dark purplish-brown to black, covered with fleshy, bright orange tubercles, and possess a specialized Y-shaped defense organ called an osmeterium that emits a pungent odor when threatened.
Geographical distribution: This species is widely distributed across the Western Hemisphere, ranging from the southern United States (primarily Texas and Florida) and the Caribbean islands, extending southward through Central America and the entire Neotropical region to northern Argentina and Uruguay.
Habitat: It thrives in diverse environments, showing a preference for open and semi-open landscapes such as tropical forest edges, woodland clearings, savannas, pastures, abandoned agricultural fields, and highly urbanized settings including suburban parks and residential gardens. Its ecological presence is strictly constrained by the availability of its host plants.
Feeding: Adults are active nectar-feeders, visiting a wide variety of flowering plants including species from the genera Lantana, Sida, and Bougainvillea. Conversely, the caterpillars are highly specialized herbivores, feeding exclusively on host plants belonging to the genus Aristolochia, commonly known as pipevines. Through this diet, the larvae sequester toxic aristolochic acids, which remain in their bodies through adulthood, rendering them highly distasteful and chemically protected against vertebrate predators.
Behavior: Characterized by a swift, fluttering, and erratic flight pattern, this butterfly typically flies close to the ground, searching for nectar sources or oviposition sites. It is highly active during sunny hours and frequently engages in mud-puddling, a behavior where males gather on damp soil or mud to extract essential minerals and sodium. It utilizes warning coloration (aposematism) to signal its unpalatability, serving as a primary evolutionary defense mechanism.
Reproduction: The reproductive cycle begins with aerial courtship, after which mating takes place on nearby vegetation. Females use chemical receptors on their forelegs to locate suitable Aristolochia host plants, laying clusters of yellowish-orange, ribbed eggs on young leaves and tender stems. Early instar caterpillars display gregarious feeding behavior, which helps overwhelm the plant´s chemical and physical defenses, but they become solitary as they mature. Once fully grown, the larva finds a secure location to pupate, forming a chrysalis that mimics a green twig or dry leaf for optimal camouflage, emerging as an adult in approximately 10 to 18 days.
Conservation status: This species has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List. Nevertheless, it is generally considered secure and common throughout its extensive geographical range. Local threats are primarily driven by pesticide application in urban landscapes and the removal of native pipevines, which are often considered weeds by gardeners.
