Description


This unique shorebird, scientifically classified as Bartramia longicauda, is a taxon of distinctive proportions characterized by a small, rounded head perched atop a remarkably long, slender neck. It reaches a body length of 10 to 12.5 inches (26 to 32 centimeters) and possesses a wingspan of 25 to 27 inches (64 to 68 centimeters). Its long, sturdy legs display a pale yellowish-green hue. The dorsal plumage features an intricate, cryptic pattern of dark brown and buff mottling, which provides exceptional camouflage within grassland vegetation. The chest is adorned with dark V-shaped chevrons, fading into a clean white belly. It features a short, straight bill with a dark tip and prominent, large dark eyes that give it a gentle facial expression. Unlike typical shorebirds, it sports a remarkably long tail that extends past its wingtips when perched.

Geographical distribution: This long-distance neotropical migratory species breeds in the temperate zones of North America, stretching from Alaska and Canada through the northern and central United States. In the late boreal summer, it embarks on an extraordinary transhemispheric journey of over 6,000 miles (10,000 kilometers) to reach its non-breeding grounds in southern South America. Its primary wintering range is concentrated in the Pampas grasslands of Argentina, Uruguay, southern Brazil, and eastern Paraguay, utilizing critical stopover sites across the Caribbean, Central America, and northern South American wetlands during its migration.

Habitat: Unlike most members of its family, this bird eschews wetlands and coastal mudflats in favor of dry, open upland ecosystems. It predominantly inhabits native prairies, shortgrass steppes, dry savannas, and low-intensity pastures. It also adapts well to human-modified habitats of similar structural complexity, including airports, fallow agricultural fields, and sod farms. It displays a strong preference for flat or gently rolling terrain with short to medium vegetation heights, allowing for both efficient cursorial movement and early detection of potential predators.

Feeding: Its diet is overwhelmingly insectivorous, reflecting its terrestrial lifestyle. It feeds heavily on grasshoppers, crickets, beetles, weevils, caterpillars, ants, and flies. Additionally, it consumes spiders, centipedes, earthworms, and terrestrial snails. During specific times of the year, it supplements this animal matter with plant material, particularly the seeds of wild grasses and leftover agricultural grains. It hunts by walking slowly and upright through the grass, using its large eyes to locate prey before seizing it with a swift, precise peck.

Behavior: This diurnal species is well-known for its upright sentinel posture, often perched atop wooden fence posts or telephone poles to scan its surroundings. During the breeding season, males perform spectacular, high-altitude courtship flights characterized by a haunting, melodious whistle often described as a wolf whistle. It is a nocturnal migrant, traveling in loose, vocal flocks that communicate via high-pitched calls in the night sky. Upon landing, it routinely holds its wings straight up over its back for a brief moment before elegantly folding them away.

Nesting: Breeding occurs from May to August on its northern nesting grounds. The nest is a shallow scrape on the ground, carefully concealed within clumps of dense grasses and lined with dry grass stems and leaves. A typical clutch consists of four buff-colored eggs blotched with dark brown. Both sexes share incubation duties for a period of 21 to 27 days. The chicks are highly precocial, leaving the nest within hours of hatching to follow their parents to foraging areas, eventually gaining full independence and flight capabilities at approximately 30 days of age.

Conservation status: It is currently classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List due to its expansive overall distribution. However, local populations have historically suffered severe declines due to the wholesale conversion of native grasslands into intensive agriculture and suburban developments. Chemical pesticide applications in both its breeding and wintering grounds pose a significant threat by depleting food resources and causing direct toxicity, prompting collaborative conservation initiatives across North and South America to preserve its remaining habitat.
