Characterized by a white to pale gray calcareous shell shaped like a truncated cone, this sessile crustacean possesses six closely knit plates. Mature specimens typically reach a basal diameter of 15 to 22 millimeters (0.6 to 0.9 inches). The exterior walls exhibit prominent, irregular longitudinal ribs that give the organism a rugged texture. Its operculum is secured by paired calcareous plates known as the scutum and tergum, which can be tightly closed to trap moisture during low tide. The internal anatomy of the tergum is distinguished by a short, blunt spur, which serves as a key diagnostic feature for species identification.
Geographical distribution: This species is native to the Pacific coast of North America, ranging from the subarctic waters of Alaska down to the warm-temperate regions of Baja California, Mexico. Over the past few decades, transport via ship ballast water and hull fouling has facilitated its introduction to foreign shores, establishing self-sustaining, non-native populations along the coastlines of Japan, portions of Atlantic Europe, and the cold-temperate shores of Argentina in the Southwestern Atlantic.
Habitat: Predominantly found in the high-to-mid intertidal zone, this marine organism is highly adapted to withstand prolonged exposure to air. It securely cements itself to a variety of hard substrates including rocky reefs, concrete pilings, vessel hulls, and the shells of bivalves, particularly blue mussels. Its remarkable tolerance to extreme desiccation, fluctuating salinities, and wave action allows it to dominate the harsh boundary between land and sea.
Feeding: Operating as an active suspension feeder, it utilizes its specialized thoracic limbs, called cirri, to capture food. When submerged by the incoming tide, the opercular valves part, and the feather-like cirri extend into the water column. Through a series of rhythmic sweeping motions, the organism filters out phytoplankton, minute zooplankton, and organic detritus. The rate of this cirral beating is dynamically adjusted in response to water flow velocity and ambient light levels.
Behavior: Although completely sessile as an adult, it exhibits complex larval behaviors designed to maximize survival. Planktonic larvae utilize chemotaxis to locate existing adult colonies, a process known as gregarious settlement, which is triggered by specific proteins released by conspecifics. Under high-density conditions, individuals compete fiercely for rock space, which often forces them to alter their typical conical shape, growing instead into tall, crowded columnar forms to ensure access to water-borne food resources.
Reproduction: Functioning as a simultaneous hermaphrodite, it relies on cross-fertilization to produce offspring. To overcome its stationary lifestyle, it develops an extraordinarily long, retractable penis during the breeding season, allowing it to deliver sperm to neighboring individuals within its physical reach. Fertilized eggs are brooded internally within the mantle cavity until they hatch into free-swimming nauplius larvae. After several planktonic molts, they transition into non-feeding cypris larvae, which are highly specialized for finding and permanently adhering to a suitable substrate.
Conservation status: This species has not been evaluated by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Due to its widespread abundance, rapid reproductive rates, and robust ecological resilience, it faces no conservation threats. In contrast, it is frequently monitored as an invasive biofouling species in regions outside its native range, where it can outcompete native intertidal organisms for valuable space.
