Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

Belongs to a medium-sized passerine taxon characterized by a total length of approximately 19 to 20 centimeters and a body mass ranging from 30 to 38 grams. The most distinctive diagnostic feature of this species is its striking pale yellowish-white or cream-colored iris, which stands out against the darker plumage of the head. Its upperparts are predominantly a warm olive-brown, transitioning to a rich rufous or reddish-brown on the rump and tail. A brilliant, clean white throat serves as another key field mark, contrasting sharply with the underparts, which are overall buffy-brown or warm ochre, shading darker on the flanks. The bill is robust, straight, and colored in shades of grayish-horn.

Geographical distribution: Is endemic to the central-eastern region of South America, primarily restricted to the highly biodiverse Atlantic Forest biome. Its range encompasses eastern and southeastern Brazil (extending from Bahia and Minas Gerais southward to Rio Grande do Sul), eastern Paraguay, and the extreme northeast of Argentina, specifically in the province of Misiones.

Habitat: Inhabits the understory and lower mid-story of humid subtropical and tropical lowland forests and mature secondary forests. It shows a strong ecological association with dense vine tangles, thick undergrowth, and stands of bamboo (particularly of the genus Guadua). It is frequently found near watercourses, ravines, and steep forest slopes where the dense vegetation provides ample cover.

Feeding: Forages as an active insectivore, consuming a wide variety of terrestrial invertebrates such as beetles, spiders, orthopterans, and insect larvae, as well as occasional small vertebrates. It searches for prey by acrobatically climbing branches and using its strong beak to pry open, toss, and tear apart suspended dead leaves, dead wood, and debris, producing a highly audible rustling sound.

Behavior: Exhibits highly active, territorial, and restless behavior, moving singly or in pairs through the dense forest undergrowth. It is a nuclear member of mixed-species foraging flocks, frequently associating with other furnariids and antbirds to enhance foraging efficiency and predator detection. Its presence is often announced by its loud, harsh, and distinctive vocalization, consisting of a series of rattling and scolding notes.

Nesting: Breeds by excavating tunnels in vertical dirt banks, clay ravines, or steep soil slopes, often alongside forest trails or streams. These burrows typically measure 50 to 100 centimeters in depth, ending in an enlarged nesting chamber that is lined with dry leaves, moss, and soft plant fibers. The female lays a clutch of two to three pure white eggs, which are incubated by both parents who also share the duties of chick rearing.

Conservation status: Is currently classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. While not globally threatened, its regional populations face constant pressure and localized declines due to the severe fragmentation, agricultural expansion, and logging of its native Atlantic Forest habitat.
