Possesses a robust, deep, and laterally compressed body shape typical of medium-sized neotropical cichlids. Adult specimens usually reach lengths ranging between 10 and 18 centimeters, although under optimal conditions, exceptional sizes of up to 20 centimeters have been recorded. Its coloration is extraordinarily variable and responds to physiological and environmental factors, displaying base tones that range from yellowish-green and olive-brown to grayish hues. The most distinctive chromatic pattern consists of a series of 6 to 8 dark vertical bars traversing the flanks of the body, which can rapidly fade or intensify in response to stress, dominance, or courtship. The dorsal and anal fins are long and end in pointed filaments in adult males, presenting a coloration that complements the body with iridescent bluish or greenish flashes along the margins. The head is large, equipped with prominent eyes with a yellowish or reddish iris, and a terminal mouth bearing small conical teeth.
Geographical distribution: Native to the Atlantic slope of South America, spanning a wide extension of the La Plata River basin. Its presence is widely documented in the middle and lower reaches of the Paraná, Paraguay, and Uruguay rivers, as well as in various coastal basins in southern Brazil, the entirety of Uruguay, and the central-eastern region of Argentina. Additionally, due to accidental releases or anthropogenic introductions linked to the aquarium trade, it has established stable, feral populations in the Iberian Peninsula, primarily affecting the basins of the Guadiana and Sado rivers in Portugal and southwestern Spain, where it behaves as an exotic species with high invasive potential.
Habitat: Prefers lentic or low-energy lotic water bodies, such as coastal lagoons, marshes, wetlands, temperate streams, and seasonal ponds. It possesses extraordinary ecological plasticity that allows it to tolerate wide thermal fluctuations, surviving in extreme temperature ranges from 5 °C during the austral winter to over 30 °C in summer. It shows a clear preference for areas with abundant submerged aquatic vegetation, exposed roots, fallen logs, and fine sand or mud substrates, which it utilizes as refuges against predators and foraging grounds. Furthermore, it exhibits notable resilience to environments with low dissolved oxygen concentrations and moderate salinity variations in estuarine zones.
Feeding: Exhibits an opportunistic and highly versatile omnivorous diet, adapting its trophic spectrum to the seasonal availability of resources in the environment. Its diet includes a wide variety of benthic macroinvertebrates, insect larvae (mainly dipterans and odonates), small crustaceans, gastropod mollusks, and organic detritus. It supplements this intake with the consumption of plant matter, such as filamentous algae and fragments of aquatic macrophytes. In high-density populations or during resource scarcity, it can act as an active predator of small fish, tadpoles, and the spawn of other fish species, thereby increasing its ecological impact in areas where it has been introduced.
Behavior: Renowned for its highly territorial nature and a sophisticated intraspecific communication system based on rapid color changes and postural displays. It is a gregarious species outside the breeding season, but establishes strict social hierarchies dominated by the largest males. When threatened or competing for resources, it flares its fins to appear larger and drastically darkens its body bars as a warning signal. It is a slow-moving swimmer that prefers to remain ambushed among riparian vegetation, though it displays remarkable agility when pursuing prey or defending its territory from intruders.
Reproduction: The reproductive cycle of this species is highly developed, characterized by a strong monogamous pair bond and rigorous biparental care. At the onset of the breeding season, which coincides with rising water temperatures in spring, the pair selects and meticulously cleans a firm substrate, typically a flat stone, a submerged log, or a large aquatic plant leaf. The female deposits between 200 and 1000 adhesive eggs of a yellowish coloration in neat lines, which are immediately fertilized by the male. Both parents jealously guard the clutch; while one fans the eggs with its pectoral fins to ensure oxygenation and prevent fungal growth, the other patrols the perimeter, displaying extreme aggression toward any approaching organism. Upon hatching, which occurs approximately 48 to 72 hours later, the larvae are transferred in the parents´ mouths to small depressions dug in the sandy substrate until they absorb their yolk sac and begin free swimming, after which they continue to be escorted by the pair for several weeks.
Conservation status: Globally, it is listed under the Least Concern (LC) category on the IUCN Red List, as its native populations are stable, widely distributed, and face no critical threats endangering the species´ short-term survival. However, in southern European regions where it has been introduced as an exotic species, it represents a severe threat to local biodiversity due to its aggressiveness, competition for resources, and predation of native fauna, making it the target of control and eradication programs by environmental authorities in the European Union.
