Dull-colored Grassquit

Is a small passerine bird measuring approximately 10 to 11.5 cm in length and weighing between 8.5 and 11 grams. It displays a notably drab and inconspicuous plumage, characterized by overall olive-brown upperparts and paler, grayish-brown underparts. Its bill is short, conical, and sharp, with a dusky upper mandible and a contrasting pale pinkish or yellowish lower mandible. Sexual dimorphism is subtle; adult males are slightly darker and more uniform in coloration, occasionally showing a faint dusky wash on the face and throat, whereas females and immature individuals are paler with a warmer, buffy-olive tinge on the belly and flanks. The irises are dark brown, and the legs are a dull gray.

Geographical distribution: Occurs widely along the eastern and western slopes of the Andean cordillera, ranging from western Venezuela, through Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia, south to northwestern Argentina (specifically Jujuy, Salta, and Tucumán provinces) and parts of western Paraguay. Disjunct populations and occasional records have also been documented in central-western Brazil.

Habitat: Inhabits forest edges, humid to semi-arid montane scrub, second-growth vegetation, agricultural fields, pastures with scattered bushes, and roadside thickets. It occupies a wide elevational range, stretching from near sea level in Pacific coastal lowlands up to 3000 meters above sea level in dry inter-Andean valleys, adapting remarkably well to human-altered landscapes.

Feeding: Is primarily granivorous, focusing its foraging efforts on the seeds of various grasses and herbaceous plants. These seeds are typically plucked directly from seed heads or gathered from the ground. During the breeding season, it supplements this seed-based diet with small invertebrates, such as tiny insects and spiders, to provide essential proteins for its developing young.

Behavior: Is a quiet and somewhat inconspicuous bird that is usually observed foraging in pairs, small family groups, or sometimes joining mixed-species flocks with other small finches and seedeaters. It spends most of its time low in dense vegetation or on the ground, moving with quick hops, and occasionally uttering thin, high-pitched buzzy calls that are easy to overlook.

Nesting: Constructs a closed, globular or dome-shaped nest with a side entrance, woven from dry grass stems, fine plant fibers, and roots. This structure is typically concealed at a low height within dense shrubs, weeds, or tall grass clumps. The clutch generally consists of 2 to 3 eggs, which are pale greenish-white or creamy white, speckled with reddish-brown spots concentrated at the larger end, incubated primarily by the female for about 12 to 14 days.

Conservation status: Classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. This status is justified by its broad geographical range, relatively stable population trends, and high ecological tolerance, which allows it to thrive in degraded habitats and agricultural frontiers where native forest has been cleared.
