Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

Exhibits striking sexual dimorphism and a small, compact body structure, measuring approximately 12 to 13 centimeters in length and weighing between 11 and 15 grams. The adult male features an unmistakable, solid coal-black plumage that contrasts sharply with a pristine, bright white head, nape, and throat. Its lower mandible displays a pale yellowish-flesh base, while the rest of the bill and iris remain dark. In contrast, the female presents a much subtler coloration, characterized by olive-brown or grayish upperparts, predominantly white underparts, and a faint white forehead and facial wash. Juvenile specimens of Arundinicola leucocephala closely resemble the adult female but show buffer tones and less defined contrasting markings on their wings and tail.

Geographical distribution: Inhabits a vast range across South America, where it is widely distributed. This species occurs from northern territories in Colombia, Venezuela, Trinidad and Tobago, and the Guianas, extending southward through almost the entirety of Brazil, eastern Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, and northern Paraguay, down to northeastern Argentina. Although it is primarily a sedentary resident throughout most of its geographic range, some populations may undergo seasonal local movements tied to regional hydrological cycles and water level fluctuations in seasonal wetlands.

Habitat: Is strictly associated with freshwater aquatic ecosystems. Its preferred environments include freshwater marshes, swamps, reedbeds, wet pastures, and the vegetated margins of lakes, ponds, and slow-moving rivers. It requires habitats with abundant emergent vegetation, particularly reeds, rushes, and low semi-aquatic shrubs, which provide essential foraging perches. This passerine avoids deep forested interiors and arid environments, thriving instead in open, sunlit wetland zones where water and low vegetation meet.

Feeding: Maintains a strictly insectivorous diet. It preys upon a wide variety of flying and terrestrial invertebrates, including flies, mosquitoes, beetles, dragonflies, and small caterpillars. Its foraging strategy is based on aerial sallying, where it sits on an exposed low perch, quickly darts into the air to catch flying insects, and returns to the same or a nearby perch. Additionally, it frequently hovers briefly over water or floating vegetation to glean insects directly from the surface of aquatic leaves.

Behavior: Is generally observed as a solitary individual or in closely knit territorial pairs. This highly active bird is known for its conspicuous habit of perching openly on high reed stems or exposed branches overhanging the water. While perched, it frequently performs a characteristic tail-pumping motion, moving its tail vertically. Males are highly territorial during the breeding season, actively defending their chosen aquatic territories against intruders through physical displays and high-pitched, metallic vocalizations.

Nesting: Constructs a bulky, spherical or globular nest with a small, circular side entrance. The nest is woven using dry grass, plant fibers, and fine roots, with the inner chamber heavily lined with soft feathers and seed down. It is typically built at low heights, ranging from 0.5 to 1.5 meters above the water, securely anchored to reeds, rushes, or low branches of flooded bushes. The female typically lays a clutch of 2 to 3 creamy-white eggs, which are often decorated with sparse reddish-brown speckles near the larger end. Incubation lasts about 14 to 16 days and is performed mostly by the female, although both parents share duties in feeding the chicks and defending the nest site.

Conservation status: Is currently classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. The overall population is considered stable, backed by an extremely large geographic distribution. It shows a notable resilience to certain types of habitat alteration, readily colonizing artificial wetlands, irrigation canals, and flooded pastures, provided that patches of emergent aquatic vegetation remain undisturbed.
