It features two pairs of antennae, with the second pair being highly prominent, compound eyes, and uniform walking legs. Its most distinctive physical adaptation is the ability to undergo conglobation, a defensive mechanism whereby it rolls into a tight, impenetrable sphere, protecting its soft appendages and significantly reducing transcuticular water loss.
Geographical distribution: Native to the Mediterranean basin and southern Europe, this organism has successfully colonized nearly every continent through global trade and human migration. It now boasts a cosmopolitan distribution, with widespread and stable populations established throughout North America, South America, East Asia, Australia, and various oceanic islands. Its synanthropic nature has allowed it to thrive in human-altered landscapes within temperate and subtropical regions worldwide.
Habitat: Thrives in terrestrial microhabitats defined by high relative humidity and moderate temperatures, which are critical because it breathes through modified pleopodal lungs that are highly susceptible to desiccation. It is commonly found under decaying logs, stones, leaf litter, mulch, compost piles, and within garden soils, agricultural fields, and temperate forest floors. During dry periods or peak daylight hours, it burrows deep into the soil or takes refuge in moist crevices to prevent dehydration.
Feeding: Functions primarily as a detritivore, playing a fundamental ecological role in nutrient cycling and organic matter decomposition. Its diet consists largely of dead leaves, decaying wood, decomposing plant tissues, fungi, algae, and occasionally tender green shoots of live seedlings. It may also consume decaying animal matter and practice coprophagy to recover essential minerals like copper, which is vital for its oxygen-transporting hemocyanin.
Behavior: Exhibits mainly nocturnal or crepuscular activity patterns to avoid the desiccating effects of solar radiation. It shows strong positive thigmotaxis (the preference for close physical contact with surfaces) and positive hygrotaxis (movement toward moisture), which leads to large aggregations under dark, damp shelters. When confronted by predators such as Dysderidae spiders, birds, or small mammals, it instantly rolls into a ball, relying on its hardened tergites for physical defense.
Reproduction: Operating as a dioecious species, its breeding cycle is heavily influenced by photoperiod and temperature, usually occurring during spring and summer. After mating, the female carries the fertilized eggs within a specialized, fluid-filled ventral brood pouch known as a marsupium. A single female can brood between 50 and 150 eggs. The young hatch inside the marsupium as mancae, a juvenile stage lacking the final pair of thoracic legs. After emerging from the pouch, they undergo a series of molts (ecdysis) over approximately one year to reach sexual maturity, with a total lifespan of three to four years.
Conservation status: Has not been formally evaluated by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Due to its massive global abundance, high ecological adaptability, and expanding synanthropic distribution, its populations are exceptionally secure and face no immediate threats of extinction.
