This is a medium-sized lepidopteran species that stands out extraordinarily within its family due to its unique wing coloration. It possesses a wingspan ranging from 40 to 50 millimeters. The most striking feature of this insect is the sexual dimorphism in its dorsal coloration; males display a brilliant metallic silver-white hue on the upper side of their wings, which reflects sunlight intensely during flight. In contrast, females exhibit a much more subdued dorsal coloration, dominated by grayish-brown or fulvous tones with subtle silver reflections restricted to the wing veins and margins. Conversely, the ventral side of both sexes is highly cryptic, adapted for camouflage on the ground; it features an intricate pattern of fine dark brown lines, grayish patches, and ochre spots that mimic the texture of rocks and dry vegetation, accompanied by small postdiscal ocelli that serve to deflect the attacks of visual predators such as birds and lizards.
Geographical distribution: It is restricted to the Southern Cone of South America, inhabiting the mountainous and steppe regions of the southern Andes in Chile and Argentina. In Chilean territory, its presence is recorded from the Coquimbo region to the southernmost areas of the Aysén region and Magallanes. In Argentine territory, its distribution mainly covers the vast Patagonian steppe and the eastern slopes of the Andean mountain range, with consolidated records in the provinces of Neuquén, Río Negro, Chubut, and Santa Cruz.
Habitat: It primarily inhabits high-altitude ecosystems and semi-arid plains, adapted to extreme climatic conditions characterized by strong winds and low temperatures. Its optimal altitudinal range is between 1,000 and 3,200 meters above sea level. This species is strictly associated with the high Andean steppe and xerophytic grasslands dominated by perennial grasses, locally known as coironales belonging to the genera Festuca, Stipa, and Poa, where it finds shelter from harsh weather and suitable sites for its life cycle development.
Feeding: It exhibits a differentiated diet depending on its biological development stage. During the caterpillar phase, it is a highly specialized phytophagous consumer that feeds exclusively on the leaves of various monocotyledonous plants, showing a marked preference for grasses of the genera Festuca and Stipa. Adults, on the other hand, possess a siphoning-type mouthpart (proboscis) with which they feed on the nectar of small wild flowers of the Asteraceae family that grow close to the ground, and frequently engage in mud-puddling on wet substrates or mud to acquire essential minerals.
Behavior: It displays a markedly diurnal and heliophilous activity, flying only during the hours of greatest solar radiation and ceasing its activity almost completely on cloudy or excessively windy days. Its flight is extremely fast, erratic, and performed at low altitude, remaining just a few centimeters above the ground to avoid Andean wind currents. When landing, it adopts a resting posture with its wings tightly closed, which instantly hides the silver shine of its dorsum and exposes the cryptic pattern of its ventral side, achieving perfect mimicry with the stony ground that makes it practically invisible to any observer.
Reproduction: It takes place seasonally during the spring and summer months of the Southern Hemisphere, coinciding with the period of greatest resource availability. Males actively patrol vegetation patches in search of receptive females through a visual display facilitated by the flash of their silver wings. After mating, the female deposits her eggs individually directly onto the leaves of the host plants or on the surrounding ground. The resulting caterpillars have a green or light brown coloration with longitudinal lines, which gives them excellent camouflage among the grass stems where they actively feed before entering a winter diapause period to finally pupate near the base of the plants.
Conservation status: It is not currently evaluated in detail on the IUCN Red List globally, appearing under the category of Not Evaluated (NE). However, at local and regional levels, the populations of this taxon face significant threats due to habitat degradation caused by overgrazing of goats and sheep, wildland fires in steppe areas, and the effects of climate change, which alter the distribution and abundance of the native grasses on which it completely depends for its survival.
