Description


Exhibits a pronounced sexual dimorphism and an anatomical structure highly adapted to subantarctic and temperate marine environments, distinguishing itself from other otariids by its characteristic double-layered fur, consisting of a dense, soft undercoat and a coarser layer of protective guard hairs. Adult males reach lengths of up to 2 meters and weigh between 150 and 200 kilograms, developing a prominent mane of longer hair over their neck and shoulders. Conversely, females are significantly smaller, measuring approximately 1.5 meters and weighing between 30 and 60 kilograms. The dorsal coloration ranges from dark gray to brownish-black, whereas the ventral area is noticeably lighter, displaying grayish or tan hues. It features a pointed snout, long pale vibrissae, and clearly visible external ear pinnae that differentiate them from true seals.

Geographical distribution: Occurs along the southern coasts of South America, spanning both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Its Atlantic distribution extends from southern Brazil (Rio Grande do Sul state), passing through the coast of Uruguay (with major breeding colonies on Isla de Lobos) and the Argentine coastline, down to Tierra del Fuego and the Falkland Islands. In the Pacific basin, it ranges from the cold waters of southern Chile northward to the coast of Peru, with northernmost breeding colonies established at the Paracas Peninsula and Isla Mazorca.

Habitat: Prefers rocky, steep coastlines, cliffs, rocky ledges, and sea caves that provide shelter from heavy surf and terrestrial predators. Unlike other pinnipeds that colonize sandy beaches, Arctocephalus australis shows a clear preference for solid rock substrates and areas containing abundant tide pools, which are actively utilized for thermoregulation during hot days. It primarily frequents the waters of the continental shelf and slope areas.

Feeding: Functions as an opportunistic and generalist predator, adjusting its diet according to the seasonal availability of marine resources. It consumes a wide variety of pelagic and demersal fish, including species from the Engraulidae and Merlucciidae families, alongside a substantial proportion of cephalopods (squid and octopus) and crustaceans (such as krill and various crabs). Foraging dives occur primarily at night, with depths routinely exceeding 50 meters and occasionally reaching down to 170 meters.

Behavior: Displays highly gregarious behavior during the breeding season, congregating in dense colonies on rocky shores, although it may adopt more solitary habits or form small groups at sea outside this period. It is an exceptionally agile swimmer, utilizing its foreflippers as the primary source of propulsion. To cope with thermal stress on land, it engages in specific behaviors such as waving its hind flippers in the air or bathing them in tide pools. Vocalizations are highly developed and serve as a crucial mechanism for mother-pup recognition within the noisy rookeries.

Reproduction: Characterized by a strongly polygynous mating system that takes place primarily between November and January. Adult males arrive first at the rookeries to establish and vigorously defend territories through visual displays, vocalizations, and physical combat, securing harems of several females. Gestation lasts approximately 12 months, which includes a phase of delayed implantation of the embryo lasting about 3 to 4 months. Females give birth to a single pup with a velvety black coat, nursing it while alternating foraging trips at sea with nursing periods ashore. Weaning is typically completed within 8 to 12 months of age.

Conservation status: Listed globally as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List due to its broad geographic range and the overall stability of its largest populations. However, specific subpopulations, notably the Peruvian one, face severe threats from extreme climatic events such as El Niño (ENSO), fisheries bycatch, competition for marine resources, and coastal habitat degradation. The species is protected under CITES Appendix II to regulate and monitor international trade.
