Description


Is a colonial hymenopteran insect widely recognized for its intricate social organization and its invaluable ecological and agricultural role as a global pollinator. Physically, its body is divided into a head, thorax, and abdomen, all covered with dense sensory hairs that facilitate pollen collection. Its coloration consists of shades of dark brown, black, and golden-yellow abdominal bands. The three distinct castes within the colony exhibit pronounced morphological dimorphism: workers measure between 10 and 15 mm in length and possess specialized structures on their hind legs known as pollen baskets or corbiculae; drones, which are the males, measure between 15 and 17 mm, lack a stinger, and feature massive compound eyes that meet at the top of the head; and the queen, the sole fertile female, has an elongated abdomen measuring 18 to 20 mm, specialized exclusively for continuous egg-laying.

Geographical distribution: Is native to Europe, Africa, and western Asia. However, due to its immense agricultural utility, it has been introduced by humans to virtually every continent. Today, established populations can be found throughout North America, South America, Australia, and eastern Asia, being absent only from the extreme polar regions of Antarctica and the most remote oceanic islands.

Habitat: Shows remarkable ecological plasticity, allowing it to thrive in a vast range of terrestrial ecosystems. It naturally colonizes temperate forests, tropical rainforests, savannas, shrublands, meadows, as well as agricultural fields and urban landscapes. For nesting and colony establishment, it requires sheltered cavities such as hollow tree trunks, rock crevices, or man-made hives, avoiding only hyper-arid deserts and high alpine zones where low temperatures restrict flight capabilities.

Feeding: Is a strict herbivore whose diet relies entirely on floral resources. It feeds on nectar, which is gathered using its chewing-lapping mouthparts and enzymatically processed into honey within its honey stomach to serve as the primary source of carbohydrates. It also harvests pollen to provide the essential proteins, lipids, vitamins, and minerals required for larval development and colony nutrition. Additionally, workers collect water to dilute honey and regulate the microclimate inside the hive.

Behavior: Features a highly sophisticated social structure characterized by division of labor based on age, a process known as temporal polyethism. Communication within the hive is exceptionally complex, utilizing pheromones and the famous waggle dance, a series of figure-eight movements that translate the distance, direction, and quality of resource patches relative to the sun. The colony also exhibits remarkable collective thermoregulation, where workers fan their wings to cool the hive or cluster tightly to generate metabolic heat during cold periods.

Reproduction: Follows a haplodiploid sex-determination system, where fertilized diploid eggs develop into females (workers or potential queens) and unfertilized haploid eggs develop parthenogenetically into males (drones). The differentiation of a larva into a queen is determined solely by continuous feeding with royal jelly. Mating takes place during high-altitude nuptial flights, during which a virgin queen copulates with several drones, storing millions of sperm in her spermatheca for the rest of her multi-year lifespan. Colony multiplication occurs through swarming, where the old queen and a significant portion of the worker workforce abandon the established hive to seek a new location.

Conservation status: Is currently listed as Data Deficient (DD) by the International Union for Conservation of Nature due to the difficulty of separating wild populations from managed agricultural colonies. Nonetheless, populations face severe global declines linked to colony collapse disorder (CCD), driven by the widespread use of neonicotinoid pesticides, habitat fragmentation, climate change, and pathogens like the parasitic mite Varroa destructor.
