Belonging to one of the most diverse and fascinating passerine families of South America, this small bird features an average body length of 13 to 14 centimeters and a body mass ranging from 10 to 13 grams. Its most striking anatomical feature is its graduated tail, whose rectrices end in bare, stiff shafts resembling spines, which provides the foundation for its common name. The facial pattern is remarkably distinctive, highlighted by a broad, bright yellow to rufous supercilium that extends to the nape of the neck, contrasting sharply with a black crown and a brownish-olive back with reddish tones. Its underparts are predominantly whitish to light gray, making it easily identifiable amid the dark forest foliage. The bill is short, slender, and pointed, perfectly adapted for probing tight crevices in tree bark. Sexual dimorphism is virtually absent, with both males and females exhibiting identical plumage and structural measurements.
Geographical distribution: This species is natively distributed throughout the southwestern tip of South America, covering a vast latitudinal range. It is highly abundant across the territory of Chile, spanning from the Coquimbo region in the north down to the rugged archipelagos of Cape Horn at the southern tip of the continent. Furthermore, it occupies a continuous belt along the forested slopes of western Argentina, particularly in the Patagonian provinces of Neuquén, Río Negro, Chubut, Santa Cruz, and Tierra del Fuego. The species is classified as a year-round resident and is largely sedentary, although some of the southernmost populations may undertake short-distance altitudinal migrations or northward movements during the harsh winter months to escape severe weather.
Habitat: It displays an obligate and deeply rooted association with the temperate rainforests of the Valdivian ecoregion and the subantarctic forests dominated by deciduous and evergreen trees of the genus Nothofagus (such as coihue, lenga, and ñire). It prefers habitats characterized by a dense, multi-layered canopy, a well-developed undergrowth, and crucially, the presence of mature and decaying trees that provide abundant natural cavities, epiphytes, mosses, and lichens. Although predominantly a forest-interior specialist, it is also frequently observed along forest edges, in regenerating secondary forests, humid shrublands, and even suburban parks and gardens that retain mature native trees.
Feeding: It maintains a strictly insectivorous diet, preying upon a diverse array of small invertebrates. Its regular diet consists of lepidopteran larvae, small beetles, dipterans, spiders, aphids, and scale insects found on foliage and bark. Its foraging technique is exceptionally active, acrobatic, and relentless; it moves rapidly through trunks and branches, thoroughly inspecting bark crevices, the undersides of leaves, and moss clumps. It frequently clings upside down from thin twigs to reach prey that is inaccessible to other avian species, using its specialized, spine-like tail feathers as a crucial brace to stabilize itself against vertical surfaces.
Behavior: It is widely recognized for its highly inquisitive, active, and fearless temperament, routinely approaching human observers at close range without showing signs of alarm. It typically travels in pairs or small family groups of three to five individuals, and it is a nuclear, sentinel member of mixed-species foraging flocks that traverse the forest canopy alongside other small birds. Its vocalizations are constant and highly distinctive, consisting of high-pitched, metallic contact calls that resemble a rapid, dry chatter sounding like "trrr-trrr-trrr" or "tsit-tsit," which helps maintain group cohesion within the dense undergrowth.
Nesting: The breeding season takes place predominantly between the months of October and January. Being a secondary cavity-nesting specialist, it relies heavily on natural hollows in old trees, abandoned woodpecker cavities, or deep fissures under peeling bark, while also showing a high rate of occupation in artificial nest boxes. Both parents actively participate in building the nest, constructing a cup-shaped structure out of fine twigs, roots, moss, and lichens, which they line thickly with a soft layer of animal hair and feathers. The female lays a clutch of 3 to 4 dull white eggs. The incubation period lasts approximately 15 days, and the nestlings remain in the cavity for about 21 days, during which they are diligently provisioned by both parents with a high-protein diet of soft-bodied invertebrates.
Conservation status: It is globally classified as a species of Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Although its overall population remains large and stable across its extensive range, the species faces growing localized threats from habitat degradation, deforestation, and the fragmentation of native temperate forests due to replacement by fast-growing exotic tree plantations. Because it relies exclusively on old-growth forest features like decaying trees with cavities for successful reproduction, the removal of dead wood and intensive forestry practices significantly reduce nesting site availability, emphasizing the need for mature forest conservation.
