Description


Characterized by a highly cryptic plumage and a slender silhouette, this passerine belonging to the genus Anthus exhibits an average length of 5.5 to 5.9 inches (14 to 15 centimeters) and a body mass ranging between 16 and 21 grams. Its upperparts are predominantly grayish-brown with prominent dark streaks, whereas the underparts present a lighter coloration, featuring a warm pale buff or cinnamon wash on the breast, which is finely streaked with dark brown. The head features a distinct creamy-white supercilium and a thin, pointed bill with a pinkish-horn lower mandible base. A key diagnostic feature during flight is the presence of pure white outer tail feathers. Its legs are relatively long and pale pinkish-brown, ending in a remarkably elongated hindclaw, which is an evolutionary adaptation for walking on terrestrial substrates.

Geographical distribution: Displays a disjunct distribution pattern across South America, split into two distinct geographical populations. The western population is associated with the Andean highlands, ranging from southern Peru, through western Bolivia and central to southern Chile, down into western Argentina. Conversely, the eastern population inhabits the lowlands, stretching from southeastern Brazil and throughout Uruguay to the Pampas region of eastern Argentina.

Habitat: Inhabits open environments, showing a strong preference for temperate grasslands, low shrubby steppes, high-altitude Andean pastures known as puna up to elevations of 12,500 feet (3,800 meters), agricultural fields, and seasonally flooded savannas. It strictly avoids dense forests or highly wooded areas, requiring open ground with low-growing herbaceous vegetation that allows for unobstructed terrestrial movement and efficient camouflage against predators.

Feeding: Maintains an primarily insectivorous diet, foraging actively by walking along the ground. It preys upon a wide variety of terrestrial invertebrates, including beetles, ants, dipteran larvae, caterpillars, spiders, and grasshoppers. Occasionally, particularly during winter or periods of low insect abundance, it supplements its diet by consuming small seeds of wild grasses gathered directly from the soil.

Behavior: Highly terrestrial in its habits, this species walks and runs swiftly across the ground instead of hopping. It is usually encountered singly or in pairs, though loose groups may form during the non-breeding season. During the breeding season, males perform a remarkable aerial display: they ascend high into the sky while uttering a repetitive, sweet song, and then parachute back to the ground with their wings held open and their tail feathers spread.

Nesting: Constructs its nest solely on the ground, masterfully concealing it beneath dense grass tussocks or low vegetation to avoid detection. The nest is a neat cup made of dry grass stems, fine roots, and sometimes lined with animal hair. The clutch typically consists of 3 to 4 eggs, which are dirty white or pale gray, heavily speckled with reddish-brown and gray markings. Incubation is carried out chiefly by the female and lasts between 12 and 14 days.

Conservation status: Categorized as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Although its overall population trend appears stable due to its extensive geographical range, localized populations are increasingly threatened by habitat fragmentation caused by intensive agriculture, real estate development, and heavy livestock grazing, which degrade the native grasslands essential for its life cycle.
