It is a medium-sized duck with a compact build and a widespread distribution across South America. One of its most distinctive features is the yellow bill tipped with black, a characteristic reflected in its scientific name. The plumage is predominantly brown, with fine markings that give the body a subtly patterned appearance. The head is generally dark brown, while the back displays a scaled effect created by the pale edges of the feathers. In flight, a dark green to blackish iridescent wing speculum can be observed, bordered by lighter areas that stand out against the rest of the wing. Males and females are similar in appearance, although males tend to be slightly larger and heavier. Juveniles resemble adults but usually show duller colors and less defined markings.
Geographic Distribution: This species is widely distributed throughout much of South America, ranging from subtropical and Andean regions to temperate and subantarctic environments in the far south. It occurs in Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Paraguay, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, and parts of Colombia. Some populations are resident year-round, whereas others undertake seasonal movements in response to water availability and food resources. Its adaptability has allowed it to colonize a remarkable variety of wetland habitats.
Habitat: It inhabits lagoons, marshes, flooded grasslands, reservoirs, slow-flowing streams, high-altitude wetlands, and coastal marshes. The species demonstrates considerable ecological flexibility and can occupy both freshwater and slightly brackish environments. Areas with abundant aquatic vegetation are often favored because they provide shelter, nesting opportunities, and feeding resources. It is also frequently found in agricultural landscapes and artificial water bodies.
Feeding: An opportunistic and versatile feeder, it consumes a wide variety of food items. Its diet consists primarily of seeds, shoots, leaves, and other aquatic plant material, supplemented by insects, larvae, mollusks, crustaceans, and other small invertebrates. Individuals commonly forage by filtering water and mud through the bill or by tipping forward to reach submerged food. This dietary flexibility contributes significantly to the species’ ecological success.
Behavior: It is commonly observed in pairs, small groups, or larger flocks depending on the season and local conditions. The species remains active throughout the day, with feeding activity often increasing during the early morning and late afternoon. Its flight is swift and direct, characterized by steady wingbeats. During the breeding season it may become more territorial, whereas outside this period it often gathers in sizeable concentrations where conditions are favorable.
Breeding: Nesting generally occurs during spring and summer, although timing varies according to latitude and local climate. The nest is typically a shallow depression concealed among grasses, reeds, or dense vegetation near water. The female lines the nest with plant material and down feathers. Clutches usually contain several cream-colored or whitish eggs. Incubation is performed mainly by the female, and the ducklings leave the nest shortly after hatching, following their mother and feeding independently at an early age.
Distinguishing it from the Yellow-billed Pintail (Anas georgica): Although the two species may occur together and can appear similar at first glance, several field marks help separate them. The Yellow-billed Teal has smoother and more uniform flanks, whereas the Yellow-billed Pintail shows a more noticeably scaled flank pattern. Head shape is also useful: the Yellow-billed Teal has a relatively flatter and more elongated head profile, while the Pintail exhibits a rounder head shape. In addition, the Pintail often shows warmer reddish tones on the head, whereas the Yellow-billed Teal generally appears darker, with brown to dark brown coloration.
Conservation Status: The species is currently classified as Least Concern (LC) because of its extensive range, large overall population, and ability to adapt to a broad spectrum of habitats. Nevertheless, local populations may be affected by wetland degradation, pollution, hunting pressure, and other human-induced environmental changes. The protection and restoration of wetland ecosystems remain essential for maintaining healthy populations throughout its range.
