The dorsal surface of the wings displays a vivid contrast of dark tones, predominantly dark brown or black, highlighted by a highly conspicuous bright red transverse band that traverses both the forewings and hindwings. Additionally, a series of rounded white spots are intricately arranged near the apex and outer margins of the forewings. In stark contrast, the ventral side of the wings exhibits a much paler, cryptic pattern composed of shades of light brown, gray, and pale pink, which provides exceptional camouflage against predators when the insect rests with its wings folded vertically. The antennae are slender with well-defined knobs, and the forelegs are highly reduced, which is a characteristic feature of its taxonomic family.
Geographical distribution: Is widely distributed throughout the Neotropical region of the American continent. Its geographic range extends from southern Central America, including nations such as Panama, down across a vast portion of South America, where it is present in countries like Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay, northern Argentina, and virtually the entirety of Brazil. It is also documented on southern Caribbean islands, most notably Trinidad and Tobago. This taxon is highly abundant in low-altitude humid zones, although it can occasionally be found on montane slopes of moderate elevation, generally remaining below 1,500 meters above sea level.
Habitat: Primarily inhabits disturbed ecosystems, transition zones, and anthropogenically modified environments. It is extremely common to encounter this species along tropical forest edges, secondary forests, wet pastures, forest clearings, abandoned agricultural fields, roadsides, and urban and suburban gardens. It displays a strong preference for open, sunny spaces that receive high levels of direct solar radiation, where wind speeds are moderate and there is a steady abundance of both host plants and nectar-producing flora. Its capability to thrive in fragmented landscapes makes it an exceptionally successful colonizer.
Feeding: In its adult stage, this insect is predominantly nectarivorous, visiting a wide variety of flowering plants and showing a marked preference for species within the Verbenaceae, Asteraceae, and Acanthaceae families. Among its primary nectar sources are flowers from the genera Lantana, Bidens, and Stachytarpheta. Conversely, during its larval or caterpillar stage, its diet is strictly folivorous, feeding selectively on the leaves of host plants, particularly within the genera Ruellia, Justicia, and Blechum, all members of the Acanthaceae family, which provide the essential nutrients required for rapid development and metamorphosis.
Behavior: Is distinguished as a highly heliophilic diurnal organism, with its peak activity strictly coinciding with the hours of maximum daily sunlight. Males exhibit a strong territorial and patrolling behavior, perching on strategic, sunlit spots on low foliage to monitor their surroundings and actively defend their territory from other males or intruders through swift, erratic aerial chases. It is common to observe individuals of both sexes engaged in wing-basking, or basking, fully spreading their wings on leaves to regulate their body temperature. Their flight pattern is characteristically low, erratic, and relatively swift, which helps them evade insectivorous avian predators.
Reproduction: The reproductive cycle commences with a dynamic aerial courtship during which the male pursues the female until she alights on vegetation. Following copulation, the female searches with high precision for the leaves of host plants belonging to the Acanthaceae family to deposit her eggs. These eggs are pale green or yellowish in color and are laid singly on the undersides of the leaves. The emerging caterpillars are shiny dark black, covered with branching, protective spines called scoli that serve as physical defenses against predators. The larval phase undergoes several instars before transitioning into a pale green or light brown chrysalis, which hangs vertically from a surface using a silk anchorage structure called a cremaster.
Conservation status: Is currently not evaluated on a global scale by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species. Nevertheless, due to its exceptional adaptability to human-modified habitats, its vast geographical range, and the high density of its local populations throughout the Neotropics, it is considered a species of least concern in terms of practical biological conservation. Its survival is highly favored by the persistence of ruderal plants that serve as abundant food resources for both larval and adult stages.
