Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

This small, ground-dwelling passerine bird belonging to the family Passerellidae typically measures between 11 and 13 centimeters in length and weighs around 11 to 19 grams. It features a cryptic dorsal plumage that is heavily streaked with grayish-brown, black, and buff, providing excellent camouflage in its grassland habitat. Its breast and belly are unstreaked, presenting a clean pale gray to whitish coloration that contrasts with the detailed pattern on its back. The most definitive diagnostic feature of this taxon is the vivid bright yellow lore and anterior supercilium that transitions to a pale whitish-gray band behind the eye. A small patch of yellowish-green is also visible on the bend of the wing (alula). The bill is strong, conical, and dark gray, suited for a diverse diet.

Geographical distribution: It is widely distributed across the South American continent, inhabiting vast regions east of the Andes. Its range stretches from northern South America in Colombia, Venezuela, and the Guianas, through most of Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay, and Uruguay, extending south into central and northern Argentina, where its presence is documented down to the provinces of La Pampa and Río Negro.

Habitat: This bird primarily occupies open, flat, and semi-open lowland ecosystems, displaying a strong preference for natural grasslands, savannas, pampas, cerrado formations, pastures, and agricultural edges. It avoids dense woodlands, closed-canopy forests, and highly mountainous terrains, though it can occur in areas with scattered shrubs up to elevations of 1500 meters above sea level. It has adapted remarkably well to human-modified rural landscapes.

Feeding: It is an opportunistic omnivore with a diet that shifts according to seasonal availability. During the dry season, it feeds extensively on grass seeds and various weed seeds. In the breeding season, it incorporates a high proportion of invertebrates to meet its protein demands, preying on grasshoppers, beetles, ants, caterpillars, and small spiders. It spends most of its time foraging on the ground, running through the dense grassy cover to capture prey.

Behavior: It is a highly terrestrial and secretive species that often goes unnoticed due to its quiet habits. When startled or threatened, it rarely takes flight; instead, it runs swiftly and fluidly through the grass roots like a rodent, a behavior frequently described as "mouse-like." During the breeding season, males become more conspicuous as they climb onto low perches, such as fence posts or tall grass stems, to deliver their distinct territorial song: a thin, high-pitched, insect-like buzz transcribed as "tzip-tzip-tzeeEEee". It is usually encountered singly or in monogamous pairs.

Nesting: The breeding period is closely linked to regional rainy seasons, which trigger a surge in insect populations. This species constructs an open-cup nest directly on the ground, masterfully hidden beneath dense grass tussocks or low-hanging vegetation. The nest is woven chiefly from dry grass stems and fine fibers. The female typically lays a clutch of 2 to 4 eggs, which are immaculate white or occasionally adorned with very fine reddish-brown speckles. Incubation is performed primarily by the female and lasts between 11 and 13 days. The nests are frequently targeted by the brood parasite Molothrus bonariensis (Shiny Cowbird).

Conservation status: It is currently classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. This classification is justified by its immense geographic range, robust population numbers, and its ability to tolerate and colonize disturbed open areas such as pastures and agricultural fields. However, the conversion of pristine native grasslands into intensive monocultures remains a potential localized threat.
