Description


Characterized by a striking and unmistakable plumage contrast, this medium-sized Neotropical passerine is renowned for its intense coloration. Adults display a brilliant scarlet-orange head, neck, and breast, which sharply contrasts with the uniform coal-black of the rest of the body, including the back, wings, and tail. Its average total length ranges between 24 and 26 centimeters, with an average weight of 60 to 85 grams. The bill is a highly specialized anatomical feature: it is jet-black, exceptionally straight, elongated, and tapers to a sharp, chisel-like tip designed for probing aquatic vegetation. There is no significant sexual dimorphism in plumage coloration, although males tend to be slightly larger and heavier than females. Juveniles are initially born with a predominantly dark brownish-black plumage, lacking any red pigment; the vibrant orange-red feathers are gradually acquired over several months through successive molts, starting on the chest and slowly spreading to the head.

Geographical distribution: Occurs as a native species in the temperate and subtropical lowlands of south-central South America. Its geographic range encompasses northern and central Argentina (extending southward to Buenos Aires, Córdoba, and La Pampa provinces), the entirety of Uruguay, southern and eastern Paraguay, the southern extremity of Brazil (most notably in the state of Rio Grande do Sul), and localized areas in eastern Bolivia.

Habitat: Extensively tied to freshwater wetlands and shallow lentic environments. It shows a strict preference for marshes, swamps, bogs, and shallow lagoons characterized by dense stands of emergent macrophytes. Specifically, it relies on extensive beds of giant bulrush (Scirpus) and cattails (Typha). The permanent presence of standing water is essential for this species, as it provides both crucial nesting sites and protection from terrestrial predators.

Feeding: Exhibits an omnivorous diet with a strong emphasis on animal matter during the breeding season. It preys on a wide variety of invertebrates, including beetles, caterpillars, spiders, aquatic insect larvae, and small snails. Its foraging strategy is highly specialized, involving a behavior known as "gaping," where it inserts its long, pointed bill into the hollow stems of aquatic plants and opens it forcefully to expose hidden insects. During seasons of low insect abundance, it supplements its diet with the seeds of aquatic plants and small wild fruits.

Behavior: Displays highly territorial habits during the breeding season, defending nesting territories vigorously, but becomes more gregarious during the winter, forming loose flocks. Its vocalizations are remarkably loud, melodious, and flute-like. Males establish singing posts atop the highest stems of reeds or low shrubs, delivering metallic, bell-like whistles to attract females and establish territory boundaries. Its flight pattern is direct and undulating, showcasing the brilliant red-orange coloration against the dark marsh background.

Nesting: Takes place during the spring and summer months, typically spanning from October to February. The nest is a deep, open-cup structure meticulously woven from wet grasses, fibers, and mud, which becomes sturdy upon drying. It is securely attached to vertical reed stems, generally positioned between 50 and 120 centimeters above the water level. The female typically lays a clutch of 2 to 4 light blue or greenish-blue eggs, marked with dark brown and black specks at the larger end. The incubation period lasts approximately 14 days and is carried out by the female, although both parents actively participate in feeding the altricial nestlings. This species is a frequent host to the brood-parasitic shiny cowbird (Molothrus bonariensis).

Conservation status: Classified as a species of Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. While its overall global population is considered stable, regional populations are vulnerable to localized declines due to the drainage of wetlands for agricultural conversion, livestock grazing, and real estate development.
