Description


Characterized by a slender silhouette, this medium-sized waterfowl measures between 14 to 16 inches (35 to 40 centimeters) in length and weighs approximately 350 to 600 grams. It exhibits a distinct sexual dimorphism primarily reflected in the coloration of its bill and legs. The adult male features a striking, bright carmine-red bill and matching reddish legs, whereas the female is distinguished by a slate-gray bill and duller limbs, complemented by conspicuous white spots located at the base of the bill and behind the eyes. The overall plumage of both sexes is predominantly a warm brownish-tan, with paler, finely mottled flanks and breast. In flight, it reveals a highly diagnostic, iridescent metallic blue-green speculum on the secondary feathers, bordered with clean white and velvety black, which serves as a vital field mark for visual identification.

Geographical distribution: Occurs widely across the lowland regions of South America, east of the Andes mountains. Its extensive range spans from northern Colombia, Venezuela, and the Guyanas, stretching southward through nearly all of Brazil and Bolivia, down to the temperate wetlands of Paraguay, Uruguay, and northern and central Argentina. Within this geographic footprint, two distinct subspecies are recognized: the nominate form Amazonetta brasiliensis brasiliensis, inhabiting the northern tropical and subtropical basins, and Amazonetta brasiliensis ipecutiri, which is larger in body size and occupies the cooler, southern reaches of the Southern Cone.

Habitat: Inhabits a diverse array of freshwater ecosystems, displaying a strong preference for lentic wetlands. It is commonly found in shallow freshwater ponds, marshes, flooded savannas, slow-moving creeks, and forest-bordered lagoons. It shows a high level of ecological adaptability, frequently colonizing temporary water bodies generated by seasonal rains. Although it favors environments enriched with abundant floating and emergent vegetation that provide safety and cover, it successfully exploits human-modified landscapes such as agricultural irrigation canals, artificial reservoirs, and aquaculture ponds, provided there is sufficient vegetative cover along the shoreline.

Feeding: Exhibits an omnivorous and opportunistic foraging strategy, adjusting its diet to the seasonal abundance of food resources. Its nutritional intake is composed of a balanced mix of plant material and small macroinvertebrates. It feeds on aquatic plant seeds, roots, tender shoots, and leaves of macrophytes, while supplementing its diet with aquatic insects, larvae, snails, small crustaceans, and occasionally tiny amphibians. Foraging is conducted mainly by dabbling, tipping the body forward to filter nutrients from the upper water column, or by picking items directly from the surface and muddy shorelines.

Behavior: Tends to be a relatively shy and secretive species, remaining close to the protective margins of aquatic vegetation. It is typically observed in monogamous pairs or small family groups of three to fifteen individuals, rarely gathering in large monospecific flocks except during extreme droughts when drying water bodies force local aggregations. This waterfowl is mostly sedentary, though it undertakes localized seasonal movements in response to hydrological fluctuations. It possesses a fast, agile flight pattern and, when startled, utters distinctive vocalizations: the male produces a high-pitched, piping whistle, while the female emits a harsh, low-pitched quack.

Nesting: Occurs opportunistically throughout the year, heavily influenced by regional rainfall patterns, though nesting activity peaks during the spring and early summer months. The nest is a well-concealed, deep cup constructed of dry grasses and leaves, carefully lined with fine down plucked from the female´s breast. This structure is placed on the ground amidst dense shoreline vegetation, or sometimes on floating mats of macrophytes. A typical clutch consists of 6 to 12 creamy-buff eggs. Incubation is performed solely by the female for a period of 25 to 28 days, while the male guards the nesting territory and actively participates in guiding and protecting the precocial ducklings once they hatch.

Conservation status: Classified as a species of Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. This classification is justified by its vast global range, stable population trends, and high tolerance for anthropogenic landscape modifications. However, localized populations face persistent threats due to wetland degradation, chemical pollution from agricultural runoff, habitat fragmentation, and localized hunting pressures, highlighting the ongoing need for wetland preservation initiatives across its native distribution.
