Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Endangered

Description

Characterized by a robust and compact silhouette, this medium-sized parrot has an average length of 12 to 14 inches and weighs between 320 and 370 grams. Its plumage is predominantly a vivid green, uniquely defined by a diagnostic vinaceous-purple chest patch that gives the species its common name. The hindneck and mantle present feathers with light blue bases and dark margins, creating a highly distinctive scaly or collared appearance. It displays a bright crimson-red forehead and lores, while the bill is rosy-red at the base of the upper mandible, fading to a horn-colored tip. In flight, a striking scarlet-red wing speculum on the secondary feathers is visible, complementing a green tail tipped with yellowish-green and showing red bases on the outer feathers.

Geographical distribution: This species is endemic to central-eastern South America. Its primary range is concentrated in southeastern Brazil, stretching from the southern parts of Bahia and Minas Gerais down to Rio Grande do Sul. Fragmented and relictual populations are also found in eastern Paraguay, specifically within the departments of Alto Paraná and Canindeyú, as well as in the far northeastern corner of Argentina, where it is almost entirely restricted to the province of Misiones.

Habitat: Primarily associated with the Atlantic Forest biome, it exhibits an extremely close ecological dependency on subtropical mixed humid forests containing Paraná pines (Araucaria angustifolia). It also occupies evergreen moist forests, submontane slopes, forest edges, and occasionally degraded agricultural landscapes with scattered trees, spanning an altitudinal gradient from sea level up to 3,900 to 6,500 feet.

Feeding: Primarily a specialized granivore and frugivore, its diet is highly adapted to the phenology of native forest trees. Its primary food source consists of the seeds or pinhões of the Paraná pine (Araucaria angustifolia), which are consumed in large quantities during autumn and winter. It also feeds on fruits, flower buds, nectar, and seeds of other native tree genera such as Podocarpus, Euterpe, Campomanesia, and Syagrus, occasionally visiting orchards to exploit cultivated fruits when forest resources are scarce.

Behavior: Highly gregarious outside the breeding season, it aggregates in large communal roosts that can host from several dozen to hundreds of individuals. It is extremely vocal during flight, emitting harsh, metallic contact calls that help maintain flock cohesion. The species performs seasonal, local altitudinal movements that are intimately synchronized with the mast seeding events of the Araucaria forests.

Nesting: The breeding season of this taxon takes place annually between August and January. It relies on natural cavities in mature, large-diameter trees, both dead and alive, showing a marked preference for cavities in Araucaria angustifolia, Aspidosperma species, and members of the Lauraceae family, typically situated at heights of 26 to 82 feet above the ground. The female lays a clutch of 2 to 4 white eggs, which she incubates for approximately 24 to 28 days while the male provides food. The altricial chicks receive biparental care and fledge after 55 to 65 days of nesting.

Conservation status: Classified as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List. This critical status is the direct result of historical and ongoing deforestation, severe fragmentation of the Atlantic Forest, and the massive reduction of Araucaria forests. Furthermore, illegal capture for the domestic and international pet trade remains a severe pressure, continuously threatening the viability of its wild populations.
