This medium-sized trochilid is characterized by its vibrant plumage, measuring approximately 3.5 to 4.3 inches (9 to 11 centimeters) in length and weighing around 5 grams. It features a metallic bronzy-green upperparts and crown, transitioning into a brilliant, glittering emerald green throat and breast. The lower abdomen is a contrasting pale gray or buff. Its most diagnostic field mark is the distinctive rufous-chestnut tail and rump, with the tail feathers subtly tipped with bronze-green. The bill is nearly straight, moderately long, and displays a striking pinkish-red coloration over the majority of the lower mandible and the base of the upper mandible, ending in a sharp black tip. Both sexes look remarkably alike, although females may sometimes show a slightly duller throat and a tiny post-ocular white spot.
Geographical distribution: It is widely distributed throughout the Neotropics, ranging from east-central Mexico southward through Central America—including Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama—into northwestern South America. In this southern portion of its range, it can be found in western and central Colombia, western Ecuador, and northwestern Venezuela. It represents one of the most ubiquitous and easily observed hummingbird species within its geographic distribution, often displaying high population densities.
Habitat: This adaptable bird occupies semi-open landscapes, secondary growth forests, edges of humid lowland forests, forest clearings, coffee and banana plantations, and anthropogenic environments like suburban gardens, parks, and agricultural fields. It generally avoids the dark interior of primary rainforests, preferring early successional habitats where sunlight promotes flower abundance. It is mostly a lowland species, found from sea level up to 4,000 feet (1,200 meters) of elevation, although it can occasionally be recorded up to 8,000 feet (2,500 meters) in inter-Andean valleys.
Feeding: Primarily nectarivorous, this species feeds on a wide array of flowering herbs, shrubs, and trees. It shows a strong preference for warm-colored, tubular flowers belonging to the genera Heliconia, Hamelia, Stachytarpheta, Erythrina, and Calliandra. To satisfy its nutritional requirement for proteins, amino acids, and fats, it actively practices hawking, catching small flying insects in mid-air, or gleans tiny spiders and insects directly from leaf surfaces and spiderwebs.
Behavior: It is renowned for its highly territorial and aggressive nature, vigorously defending rich feeding territories against other hummingbirds, larger nectar-feeding birds, and even large insects such as hawkmoths. It maintains constant surveillance from conspicuous perches and utters persistent, sharp, high-pitched chipping vocalizations to deter intruders. During territorial defense and courtship, it performs rapid vertical aerial displays. Despite its combative temperament, it plays an indispensable ecological role as a major pollinator across its range.
Nesting: The breeding season can occur almost year-round depending on regional rainfall and floral resource availability. The female is solely responsible for nest construction, incubation, and rearing the young. She builds a tiny, compact cup-shaped nest composed of fine plant fibers, seed down, and cobwebs, which allow the nest structure to stretch as the chicks grow. The exterior is expertly camouflaged with bits of lichen and moss. The nest is typically situated on a low horizontal branch or fork, usually 3 to 15 feet (1 to 5 meters) above the ground. The clutch consists of two white eggs, incubated for 15 to 19 days. The altricial nestlings are fed regurgitated nectar and insects, eventually fledging after 18 to 22 days.
Conservation status: It is classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. This classification is supported by its massive geographic range, stable population trend, and remarkable ability to tolerate and even benefit from human-altered habitats, such as agricultural conversion and urbanization, which create abundant edge habitats and ornamental gardens.
