It is the largest member of the deer family and one of the most impressive terrestrial mammals of the Northern Hemisphere. It possesses a massive body, exceptionally long legs, and an elongated head with a distinctive broad muzzle. The coat generally varies from dark brown to grayish-brown and nearly black tones, providing excellent insulation against harsh climates. Males develop spectacular broad palmate antlers, among the largest found in any living animal, which are shed and regrown annually. Another distinctive feature is the pendulous flap of skin and hair hanging beneath the throat, commonly known as a dewlap. Its long legs allow efficient movement through deep snow, wetlands, and dense vegetation. The species’ large body size is an important adaptation for conserving heat in the cold environments it inhabits.
Geographic Distribution: Alces alces is widely distributed throughout boreal and cool temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere. It occurs across much of Canada and Alaska, the northern United States, Scandinavia, the Baltic countries, Eastern Europe, and vast areas of Russia and northern Asia. Throughout its range, it occupies some of the largest forest ecosystems on Earth. Although certain populations have experienced local fluctuations due to environmental changes and human pressures, the species remains widespread across much of its historical distribution.
Habitat: This species primarily inhabits boreal forests, mixed woodlands, taiga ecosystems, wetlands, peatlands, lake margins, river corridors, and areas with abundant shrub vegetation. It shows a strong preference for landscapes that combine forest cover with water bodies, which provide food, shelter, and favorable thermal conditions. During summer, wetlands and aquatic habitats are frequently used to reduce heat stress and avoid biting insects. Its adaptation to severe climates and ability to move through deep snow make it one of the most characteristic mammals of northern ecosystems.
Diet: It is a browsing herbivore whose diet consists mainly of leaves, shoots, twigs, bark, aquatic plants, and shrubs. Unlike many other deer species that consume large quantities of grasses, this species obtains much of its food from woody vegetation. During spring and summer, aquatic plants become particularly important because they provide valuable minerals and nutrients. In winter, when food availability declines, woody stems and bark become major dietary components. Its specialized digestive system enables efficient utilization of plant resources available in cold and highly seasonal environments.
Behavior: Adults are generally solitary outside the breeding season. It is a reserved and cautious species, although individuals may become aggressive when threatened or during the rut. It is an excellent swimmer capable of traveling long distances through water and crossing large lakes and rivers. The species can also dive beneath the surface to reach submerged aquatic vegetation. Its senses of smell and hearing are highly developed and play a crucial role in predator detection and communication.
Reproduction: Breeding generally takes place during autumn. During this period, males compete for access to females through displays, vocalizations, and antler-based confrontations. Following a gestation period of approximately eight months, females usually give birth to one or two calves during spring. Newborns develop rapidly and are capable of moving shortly after birth. During the first months of life, they remain under close maternal care, with females actively defending them from potential threats. Young animals often remain with their mothers until the next breeding season.
Conservation Status: Globally, the species is classified as Least Concern (LC) because of its broad distribution and substantial population size. Nevertheless, some local populations face challenges associated with habitat fragmentation, climate change, vehicle collisions, disease, and increasing parasite loads favored by warmer temperatures. Continued monitoring remains important for understanding population trends across its extensive range.
