Description

Exhibits a striking sexual dimorphism and a morphology specialized for marshland environments. The adult male is clad in a lustrous, uniform black plumage, sharply contrasted by vibrant yellow shoulders (lesser wing coverts and underwing coverts) that become highly conspicuous during flight and courtship displays. In contrast, the female displays a highly cryptic plumage, characterized by streaked brownish-gray tones, a pale superciliary stripe, and a lighter throat. The bill is sharp, conical, and black, adapted for diverse foraging techniques, while the iris is dark brown. The total length of this passerine ranges between 7.0 and 7.8 inches (18 to 20 centimeters), weighing approximately 35 to 45 grams.

Geographical distribution: Occurs widely across the Southern Cone of South America. Its range extends from the Andean valleys of central Peru and western Bolivia, south through Chile (from the Atacama region to Aisén) and Argentina (predominantly the Pampas and northern Patagonia). It is also widely distributed across Uruguay and reaches the southernmost state of Brazil, Rio Grande do Sul.

Habitat: Is strictly associated with freshwater and brackish wetland ecosystems. It thrives in marshes, reed beds, swamps, and flooded grasslands dominated by emergent vegetation such as Typha (cattails) and Schoenoplectus (bulrushes). It also colonizes agricultural drainage ditches, lake margins, and irrigated crop fields adjacent to permanent bodies of water.

Feeding: Has an omnivorous diet with a strong insectivorous preference during the breeding season. It preys on a wide array of invertebrates, including insect larvae, beetles, spiders, and small aquatic mollusks. It supplements this diet by consuming grass seeds and wild grains, foraging directly on damp soil, mudflats, or by probing within aquatic vegetation.

Behavior: Displays highly gregarious habits, forming cohesive, medium to large flocks during the non-breeding season, often in association with other icterid species. During the spring, males become intensely territorial, defending breeding patches within the reeds through metallic, buzzy vocalizations and visual displays where they flare their yellow shoulder patches. Its song consists of a mixture of harsh, buzzy notes and clear, musical whistles delivered from high perches.

Nesting: Begins with the establishment of territories within marsh vegetation. The nest is a deep, woven cup constructed from wet grass, rush fibers, and leaves, which shrink and tighten as they dry. This structure is firmly lashed to upright stems of reeds or cattails, suspended at a safe height of 1 to 3 feet above the water level to deter terrestrial predators. The female typically lays 2 to 4 pale blue-green eggs, marked with dark brown or blackish spots and scrawls. Incubation is carried out primarily by the female for 11 to 13 days, though both parents actively share the duties of provisioning the nestlings.

Conservation status: Is currently evaluated as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Although its global population remains stable due to its adaptability and extensive range, localized populations face threats from the drainage, fragmentation, and pollution of wetlands for agricultural expansion and urban development.
