Speckled Hummingbird

This is a small-sized taxon characterized by its compact morphology and distinctive facial markings, measuring approximately 8 to 9 centimeters in total length and weighing between 3.8 and 4.4 grams. The upperparts display a vibrant bronzy-green coloration with a subtle metallic sheen, which contrasts with the dingy, pale buffy-white underparts that are heavily adorned with greenish or dusky speckles, particularly concentrated on the throat and breast. A prominent diagnostic feature is the blackish auricular mask that covers the cheeks, bordered above by a striking whitish or buffy postocular stripe. The bill is relatively short, measuring 13 to 15 millimeters, straight, and entirely black. Sexes are monomorphic, although females may sometimes exhibit more extensive pale tips on their outer tail feathers.

Geographical distribution: Occurs in a continuous manner throughout the montane regions of the Andes, stretching from northern Venezuela, through Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia, reaching its southern limit in the yungas forests of northwestern Argentina. Its elevational range is typically restricted to subtropical zones, spanning from 1000 to 2500 meters above sea level, though localized populations can sometimes be detected at altitudes as high as 3000 meters.

Habitat: Mainly associates with the understory and mid-story of humid montane forests, cloud forests, and secondary woodland edges. This adaptable hummingbird is frequently encountered in regenerating clearings, shaded coffee plantations, and dense shrubby areas near ravines and streams. It exhibits a clear preference for microclimates characterized by a high abundance of mosses, ferns, and epiphytic vegetation, which provide both shelter and foraging opportunities.

Feeding: Consumes a specialized diet primarily composed of nectar from small to medium-sized tubular flowers, frequently visiting plants belonging to the families Ericaceae, Gesneriaceae, and Lobeliaceae. To fulfill its essential protein requirements, this active nectarivore complements its diet by hawking small flying insects and gleaning spiders directly from the undersides of leaves and mossy branches within the lower forest strata.

Behavior: Exhibits a solitary and highly territorial lifestyle, aggressively defending localized floral resources from competitors of a similar size, although it is often subordinate to larger, more dominant hummingbird species. It frequently utilizes a foraging strategy known as trap-lining, where it flies along established routes to visit scattered flowering plants rather than defending a single territory. Its flight is exceptionally agile, characterized by rapid wingbeats that allow for precise hovering and backward movements.

Nesting: Constructs a compact, cup-shaped nest meticulously woven with green moss, soft plant down, and spiderwebs, which provide structural strength and excellent camouflage. These nests are typically placed on low branches, exposed roots, or rocky crevices along steep embankments, often near running water or waterfalls. The female lays a clutch of two white eggs, which she incubates alone for a period of 17 to 19 days while defending the nesting territory.

Conservation status: Evaluated as a species of Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Although its Andean forest habitat faces ongoing threats from deforestation, agricultural expansion, and habitat fragmentation, this taxon remains relatively common and adaptable to secondary habitats, ensuring its stable population status across its extensive range.
