Description


Characterized by a striking warning coloration, this medium-sized lepidopteran displays a wingspan averaging between 50 and 65 millimeters. The forewings are primarily dark brown to black, accented by translucent patches and vibrant orange or reddish postdiscal bands. The hindwings present a highly distinct radiated pattern, featuring prominent black veins over a solid brick-red or deep orange ground color. This contrasting visual design serves as a classic aposematic signal to potential predators. Sexual dimorphism is subtle, with females generally being larger, stouter, and exhibiting slightly duller, more translucent wing pigmentations compared to the more brightly colored males.

Geographical distribution: Occurs predominantly within the Neotropical regions of South America. Its geographic range is concentrated heavily in the Atlantic Forest of southeastern and southern Brazil, spanning states such as Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Paraná, and Rio Grande do Sul. It is also frequently recorded in the northeastern humid forests of Argentina (specifically within the Misiones province) and eastern portions of Paraguay.

Habitat: Inhabits moist forest biomes, showing a strong affinity for the Atlantic Forest ecosystem. It is commonly found along forest edges, clearings, secondary growth forests, riparian corridors, and damp shaded trails. The species thrives in subtropical environments where moderate sunlight filters through the canopy, maintaining a high level of ambient humidity necessary for the development of its host plants.

Feeding: As an adult, it feeds on nectar using its elongated proboscis, visiting a wide variety of flowering plants, with a strong preference for the family Asteraceae (such as Chromolaena and Eupatorium species). In contrast, the larval stage is highly specialized and herbivorous, feeding almost exclusively on the foliage of climbing vines in the genus Mikania, commonly known as guaco. Through this diet, the caterpillars sequester secondary toxic metabolites, which are retained through metamorphosis into adulthood.

Behavior: Displays a slow, fluttering, and remarkably deliberate flight pattern close to the understory vegetation. This relaxed flying behavior is a direct consequence of its chemical defense mechanism; the insect is highly unpalatable to birds and other predators due to the toxic compounds sequestered during its larval stage. Adults are often seen basking in sunny patches or aggregating on flowering shrubs during the warmest hours of the day. The caterpillars exhibit strong gregarious behavior during their early developmental stages, feeding and moving together in dense groups under communal silk webs to deter predators and regulate microclimate.

Reproduction: The lifecycle begins with aerial courtship rituals near the canopy. Following successful mating, the female performs gregarious oviposition, laying clusters of dozens of yellowish, ribbed eggs on the underside of the host plant leaves (Mikania spp.). The larvae hatch synchronously and undergo several instars, feeding collectively and skeletonizing the leaves. Upon reaching maturity, the caterpillars disperse slightly to find secure pupation sites, suspending themselves head-down from a silk button. The resulting chrysalis is well-camouflaged, resembling dry plant matter, from which the adult emerges after a pupal phase of several weeks.

Conservation status: Has not been globally evaluated by the IUCN Red List and is generally considered locally common throughout its remaining native range. However, because its survival is inextricably linked to the highly threatened Atlantic Forest biome, localized populations face significant risks due to habitat fragmentation, agricultural expansion, and the loss of native host plants, highlighting the importance of regional habitat preservation efforts.
