Previously included in the genus Camarhynchus, but Lamichhaney et al. (2015) show that this genus is embedded in Geospiza. It seems to be an intermediate between the Small Tree Finch (Geospiza parvula) and the Parrot Finch (Geospiza psittacula), very similar to the subspecies G. p. salvini of the Small Tree Finch, which has a noticeably larger beak and body size than the nominal subspecies. It may be confused with the Small Tree Finch, which also inhabits Floreana and is even more common than this one, while the Parrot Finch would be extinct in Floreana (Kleindorfer et al., 2022). The beak is larger than that of the Small Tree Finch nominal subspecies (G. p. parvula), but it does not have the strong curvature at the culmen like the Parrot Finch. It is affected by the Avian Vampire Fly (Philornis downsi) (Fessl et al., 2017), which possibly reduces its reproductive success. Monotypic.
Geographic Distribution: Only present in the highlands of Floreana (BirdLife International, 2023).
