Macho perchado en un cardón.
El más grande de los strígidos sud-americanos con cuernos conspicuos, en estas áreas xerofíticas se les observa solo o en parejas en los roquedales de las colinas o en los bosques arbolados al margen de las quebradas. No exclusivamente nocturno y nada arisco ,se les suele contemplar por horas sin mostrar nerviosismo alguno. Su llamada es "Juuu-Juuu" profundo.
