Generalmente andan en pareja o en grupos , se reconoce al macho por su banda malar roja
La hembra se distingue por su banda malar punteada de blanco y negro a diferencia del macho que es roja. Nidifican en huecos de árboles, mayormente terrestres para alimentarse.
