El Apterocaulus germainii se puede distinguir del Calocomus desmaresti porque este ultimo tiene dos manchas amarillas distinguibles en los elitros y alas bien desarrolladas. Apterocaulus germainii tiene las alas atrofiadas (por eso Aptero...) y las patas mas largas para una forma de vida cursorial.
