Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

Belongs to one of the largest and most robust picid lineages in the Neotropical region, measuring between 12.6 and 14.6 inches (32 to 37 centimeters) in length and weighing approximately 8.1 to 10.2 ounces (230 to 290 grams). This species displays a striking sexual dimorphism focused on its head plumage. The male exhibits a brilliant, vibrant red head, crest, and neck, with a minor black and white spot located on the ear coverts. Conversely, the female features a prominent white longitudinal stripe outlined in black that runs from the base of the bill across the cheek, retaining a red crest on the hindneck. The upperparts of both sexes are predominantly blackish-brown, while the underparts present a dense barred pattern of buff, cinnamon, and black. It is equipped with a powerful, straight, ivory-gray bill specialized for excavating dense timber.

Geographical distribution: Occurs as a native resident in the east-central regions of South America. Its geographic range encompasses southeastern Brazil (from Bahia and Minas Gerais southward to Rio Grande do Sul), eastern Paraguay, and northeastern Argentina, where it is primarily restricted to the humid forests of the Misiones Province.

Habitat: Primarily frequents the highly diverse Atlantic Forest biome, inhabiting humid subtropical and temperate primary forests, mature secondary forests, and highland formations dominated by native conifers such as the Parana pine (Araucaria angustifolia). It requires mature forest interior habitats containing a high density of old-growth trees and standing decaying wood, which are vital for its foraging and breeding dynamics.

Feeding: This species is highly insectivorous, specializing in the extraction of wood-boring coleopteran larvae (particularly from the Cerambycidae and Buprestidae families). It uses its heavy bill to strip bark and chip deep cavities into decaying trunks, retrieving larvae with its elongated, sticky, and barbed tongue. In addition to wood-boring grubs, its diet includes ants, termites, and occasionally various wild fruits depending on seasonal availability.

Behavior: Characterized by its diurnal, highly territorial habits, usually seen foraging singly, in pairs, or in small family cohorts. It displays a strong, undulating flight pattern. Its acoustic communication is remarkable, featuring a loud, nasal vocal call and a diagnostic double-tap drum executed rapidly on resonant tree trunks, which is a signature acoustic signature of the genus Campephilus used for territorial advertisement and pair-bonding.

Nesting: The breeding cycle begins with both mates selecting a large dead or decaying tree trunk to excavate a spacious nest chamber, typically positioned at heights exceeding 26 feet (8 meters) above the forest floor. The female lays a clutch of 2 to 4 glossy white eggs directly onto wood chips left at the bottom of the cavity. Both parents share incubation duties, which last about 15 to 18 days, and cooperatively provision the altricial chicks until they fledge.

Conservation status: Classified as a species of Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List due to its extensive geographical distribution. Nonetheless, its populations are experiencing a downward trend driven by severe habitat fragmentation, deforestation of the Atlantic Forest, and the logging of mature, large-diameter trees essential for its nesting and foraging.
