Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

Characterized by a robust and elegant passerine silhouette, this medium-sized bird reaches an overall length of 24 to 26 centimeters and weighs between 80 and 110 grams. The plumage is dominantly muted but distinctive, presenting a dark olive-brown mantle and back that subtly contrasts with pale grayish-olive to ochreous-buff underparts. The crown is notably darker, exhibiting a nearly blackish cap, while the throat features fine whitish and brownish streaking. Its most diagnostic and striking morphological features are the bright orange-yellow bill and the matching rich yellow legs and feet, complemented by a prominent, bare yellow orbital ring. Juveniles differ significantly from adults, displaying a heavily spotted brown-and-buff breast and fine pale streaks across the upperparts, which serves as camouflage during their fledging stage.

Geographical distribution: Endemic to the Southern Cone of South America, its range extends across a vast territory encompassing central and southern Chile (from the Atacama region down to Cape Horn), southwestern and Patagonian Argentina, the Falkland Islands, and the Juan Fernández Archipelago. Within the mainland, the subspecies Turdus falcklandii magellanicus dominates, undertaking altitudinal and northward latitudinal migrations during the harsh austral winter months, whereas the nominate subspecies, Turdus falcklandii falcklandii, remains restricted to the Falkland Islands, where individuals are conspicuously larger and heavier.

Habitat: Thrives across an impressive variety of ecosystems from sea level up to approximately 2,000 meters in elevation. It is heavily associated with the humid temperate forests of the Andean-Patagonian region, dominated by Nothofagus beech trees, as well as sclerophyllous scrublands, forest edges, wetlands, and moist grasslands. Additionally, it displays remarkable ecological plasticity, becoming highly abundant in anthropogenically modified landscapes such as residential gardens, urban parks, fruit orchards, and agricultural zones, where it easily finds both shelter and alternative foraging opportunities.

Feeding: Exhibits a highly generalist and opportunistic omnivorous diet that shifts seasonally. During the spring and summer breeding seasons, its diet consists primarily of terrestrial invertebrates, including earthworms, snails, slugs, and a wide array of insect larvae and adults extracted directly from damp soil or leaf litter. In autumn and winter, its trophic ecology shifts heavily toward frugivorous habits, consuming a vast diversity of native wild berries such as calafate (Berberis microphylla), maqui (Aristotelia chilensis), and mistletoes, alongside introduced fruits like blackberries and elderberries, playing a vital role as a seed disperser within its range.

Behavior: Notably terrestrial in its foraging habits, it moves across lawns and forest floors with a series of agile hops and short runs, pausing abruptly to tilt its head, likely detecting underground prey through sight and sound. It is a highly active and territorial species, particularly during early morning and late evening, when males deliver a powerful, melodious, and flute-like song from high perches to defend territories and attract mates. While generally solitary or seen in pairs, it may assemble in loose feeding flocks during winter when food resources are concentrated, showing a high degree of habituation to human presence in urbanized areas.

Nesting: Breeding occurs from late winter through mid-summer, with peak activity concentrated between September and January. While both sexes establish and defend the nesting territory, the female performs most of the construction. The nest is a bulky, deep cup structure woven from twigs, dry grass, moss, and roots, consolidated internally with a layer of wet mud and lined with finer plant fibers. It is typically positioned at low to moderate heights in dense forks of shrubs, trees, or occasionally on man-made ledges. Clutch size typically ranges from 2 to 4 pale greenish-blue eggs, heavily speckled with reddish-brown spots. Incubation is carried out solely by the female for 12 to 14 days, while both parents actively participate in provisioning the nestlings, which fledge approximately two weeks after hatching.

Conservation status: Classified as a species of Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. This designation reflects its exceptionally large geographic range, stable and potentially expanding populations within human-modified habitats, and the absence of any severe, widespread threats that could jeopardize the taxon´s long-term survival in its native ecosystem.
