A special edition of the Birding Challenge, exclusive to PAYDA Network members, consists of birdwatching and recording competitions in South America for one month in winter 2025.
The regions to participate are: South America (Total region), regions by country (Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, French Guiana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay and Venezuela) and sub-regions for the Southern Cone: Patagonia (in Chile the regions of La Araucanía, Los Ríos, Los Lagos, Aysén and Magallanes, and in Argentina the provinces of Neuquén, Rio Negro, Chubut, Santa Cruz, Tierra del Fuego and the South Atlantic Islands), Argentine Coast (Formosa, Chaco, Santa Fe, Misiones, Corrientes and Entre Ríos), Argentine Northwest (Jujuy, Salta, Tucumán, Catamarca and Santiago del Estero), Cuyo (provinces of La Rioja, San Juan, Mendoza and San Luis), Centro (Córdoba) and Pampas (Uruguay, and the provinces of La Pampa, Buenos Aires and the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires).
There are three categories: the largest number of species observed, the largest number of species documented and the best records. The "largest number" categories can be followed day by day through the site's reports, while the results of the "best" categories will be posted in August.
How does it work? The record support platform for this special competition is EcoRegistros. Based on the records published by each participant and team, the team rankings for each region in the "Observed" and "Documented" categories are automatically organized. Additionally, species lists recorded by each participant and team in each region are automatically generated. You just need to publish records of bird species observed throughout the competition week.
The material may be used in the Freebirds project to enrich the species guide.
Requirements to participate:
Be a member of the PAYDA network and express the desire to participate.
PAYDA coordination will organize the teams, ensuring a balanced regional and experience balance among the participants.
Participation is free.
You only need to enjoy birdwatching and publish your records!
