More than 200 distinct color forms havebeen described in natural populations ofthe harlequin ladybird,Harmonia axyridis.Gautier et al. show that this variation iscontrolled by the transcription factorPannier. Pannier is necessary to produceblack pigment, and its expression patternprefigures the coloration pattern in eachcolor form.
