Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

Characterized by a specialized morphology for arboreal foraging, this medium-sized passerine measures between 17 and 19 centimeters in length and weighs approximately 17 to 25 grams. Its plumage is predominantly a warm olive-brown, decorated with conspicuous buffy-white streaks that run across the head, hindneck, mantle, and breast, creating a distinct mottled appearance. A defining physical trait of this species is its clean whitish or pale buff throat, which stands out against its darker underparts. The wings, rump, and stiff tail feathers display a striking rufous-chestnut color. The bill is moderately long, slender, and slightly decurved, featuring a dark grey upper mandible and a noticeably paler, ivory-colored lower mandible. Its rectrices end in stiff, spiny tips that provide essential mechanical support when leaning against rough vertical tree trunks during vertical climbing.

Geographical distribution: This bird is endemic to the Atlantic Forest region of eastern South America. Its geographic range covers eastern and southeastern Brazil, spanning from the northeastern states of Ceará and Bahia southwards to Rio Grande do Sul. It is also found in the moist semi-deciduous forests of eastern Paraguay and reaches its southern limit in northeastern Argentina, specifically restricted to the humid forests of the Misiones province.

Habitat: Primarily frequents the interior, understory, and mid-story of subtropical and tropical moist lowland forests, as well as montane moist forests and older secondary growth woodlands. It is heavily associated with the highly biodiverse biome of the Atlantic Forest. While it displays a preference for pristine primary forests, it can adapt to fragmented forest patches and mature selectively logged woodlands, typically remaining within the lower and middle strata of the forest canopy.

Feeding: It is a dedicated insectivore whose diet consists of arthropods, wood-boring larvae, spiders, beetles, and ants. It searches for prey by gleaning and probing bark crevices, mosses, lichens, and bromeliads. It is a frequent participant in mixed-species feeding flocks, moving alongside other insectivorous forest birds. Additionally, it occasionally follows army ant swarms, positioning itself on low trunks to capture fleeing insects disturbed by the ants´ progression on the forest floor.

Behavior: Typically observed foraging alone or in pairs, maintaining year-round territories. Its movement is highly specialized, climbing trunks vertically in a characteristic spiral pattern before flying down to the base of a nearby tree to repeat the process. Its vocalization consists of a clear, musical series of descending whistled notes, which is used actively for territorial defense and mate communication, especially during early morning hours.

Nesting: This species utilizes natural tree cavities, decayed hollow trunks, or abandoned woodpecker cavities for reproduction. The chamber is carefully lined with a soft mattress of dry leaves and shredded bark fibers. The typical clutch consists of two immaculate white eggs. Incubation is shared by both parents and lasts for approximately 15 to 17 days. Both adults contribute to feeding the nestlings and keeping the nest clean until the young fledge and depart the cavity after about three weeks of care.

Conservation status: Classified as a species of Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. Although it is not considered globally threatened due to its relatively wide distribution, regional populations face ongoing threats from severe habitat fragmentation, deforestation, and the overall degradation of the Atlantic Forest due to expanding agriculture, logging, and urban development.
