Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

This is a large and robust member of the woodcreeper subfamily, measures between 27.5 and 33 centimeters in length, and weighs approximately 110 to 130 grams. It features a heavy, elongated, and slightly decurved bill colored in dark gray or blackish. Its most prominent diagnostic feature is a stark, immaculate white throat that stands out against a finely streaked dark face and neck. The upperparts are mostly warm rufous-brown, intensifying to a brighter rufous on the flight feathers and the stiff, spine-tipped tail. The underparts display an olive-brown coloration adorned with bold whitish-buff streaks that taper off towards the lower abdomen.

Geographical distribution: It is endemic to the Atlantic Forest biome of South America. Its range encompasses southeastern and southern Brazil (from Bahia and southern Minas Gerais down to Rio Grande do Sul), eastern Paraguay, and the northeastern tip of Argentina, specifically restricted to the humid forests of the Misiones province.

Habitat: This bird primarily occupies the interior of humid subtropical and tropical evergreen forests, including montane forests and mature secondary woodlands. It shows a strong affinity for undisturbed primary forests with dense canopy structures, ranging from sea level up to elevations of 1,500 meters, where mature trees and abundant epiphytic growth provide suitable microhabitats.

Feeding: Primarily insectivorous, this species targets a wide array of invertebrates, beetles, large spiders, and larvae extracted from tree bark and decaying wood. It is also an opportunistic predator of small vertebrates, including tree frogs and small lizards. Foraging techniques involve gleaning, probing epiphytes such as bromeliads, and searching through accumulated organic debris in tree forks.

Behavior: Typically encountered singly or in pairs, this woodcreeper regularly joins mixed-species foraging flocks moving through the forest mid-story. It is a well-known follower of army ant swarms, positioning itself on vertical trunks near the ground to capture insects fleeing from the ants. It climbs trees with a spiral trajectory, utilizing its specialized stiff tail feathers for stability. Its vocalization is highly distinctive, characterized by a series of loud, clear, descending whistles that carry over long distances through the dense foliage.

Nesting: This species relies on natural tree cavities or old cavities excavated by woodpeckers situated in large-diameter trees. The internal chamber is meticulously lined with bark flakes, dry leaves, and soft plant fibers. A typical clutch consists of two to three white eggs. Both adults participate in the incubation duties and share the responsibility of feeding the altricial nestlings with a diet rich in soft-bodied insects.

Conservation status: It is currently assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Nevertheless, regional populations are vulnerable and declining due to the extensive fragmentation and loss of the Atlantic Forest, which drastically reduces the availability of mature nesting trees and undisturbed interior habitats.
