Characterized as a robust-bodied terrestrial serpent, this species typically reaches lengths of 70 to 90 centimeters, with exceptional specimens reaching up to 100 centimeters. It features a broad head, distinctly demarcated from the neck, with large eyes and round pupils. Its dorsal coloration pattern represents an extraordinary case of Batesian mimicry, mimicking the dangerous pit vipers of the genus Bothrops. The dorsum exhibits a series of hourglass-shaped or alternating triangular bands in shades of dark brown, gray, olive-green, or reddish-brown, outlined by lighter borders against a paler background. Ventrally, the body is whitish or yellowish with irregular dark spots. It possesses a functional opisthoglyphous dentition, characterized by enlarged, ungrooved rear maxillary teeth connected to Duvernoy´s gland, which secretes a mild toxin highly effective for immobilizing anurans, although it poses no severe medical threat to humans.
Geographical distribution: It is widely distributed across the Neotropical region. Its geographical range extends from southern Mexico (including the Yucatan Peninsula and Chiapas), through the entirety of Central America (Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama), and deep into South America. Within the South American continent, its presence is well-documented in Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, the Guianas, and northern Brazil, primarily occupying the vast Amazon basin and the humid forested foothills of the Andes.
Habitat: Primarily inhabits tropical wet and moist forests, premontane forests, and humid transitional woodlands. It is closely associated with damp, shaded environments in the understory, frequently found slithering through the dense forest leaf litter near streams, swamps, and temporary pools. Its altitudinal distribution is remarkably broad, ranging from sea level up to approximately 1,500 meters above sea level. It also demonstrates moderate tolerance to anthropogenic disturbances, occasionally being observed in secondary growth forests, cacao and coffee plantations, and rural gardens.
Feeding: This reptile exhibits a highly specialized dietary regime, being classified primarily as an anuran specialist. Its diet consists almost exclusively of amphibians, showing a strong evolutionary preference for toads of the family Bufonidae, particularly those of the genus Rhinella. To overcome the defense mechanism of these toads, which inflate their bodies with air when threatened, this snake uses its enlarged rear maxillary teeth to puncture and deflate the prey before swallowing it. Furthermore, it possesses an advanced physiological resistance to the lethal cardiotoxic bufadienolides secreted by the parotoid glands of these toads.
Behavior: Is a predominantly terrestrial and diurnal species, though it may show increased activity during crepuscular hours. When confronted by a threat, it displays a highly sophisticated defensive repertoire aimed at deterring predators. This behavior includes the striking dorsoventral flattening of the head and neck, creating a triangular shape that closely resembles a venomous pit viper. Additionally, it may vibrate its tail rapidly against dry leaves to mimic a rattlesnake, perform false strikes with its mouth closed, and occasionally bite if cornered or handled roughly.
Reproduction: This species is strictly oviparous, with its reproductive cycle closely synchronized with regional precipitation patterns, maximizing prey availability for the offspring. Females lay clutches containing 8 to 18 eggs with soft, leathery shells. These clutches are carefully concealed under rotting logs, within subterranean cavities, or deep inside moist leaf litter piles to maintain necessary humidity levels. The incubation period lasts between 60 and 75 days, after which self-sufficient neonates hatch, measuring approximately 15 to 20 centimeters in total length.
Conservation status: Currently listed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. This status is justified by its wide geographic range, its occurrence in multiple protected areas, and its ability to persist in moderately altered landscapes. However, local populations face localized threats due to habitat loss and fragmentation driven by deforestation and agricultural expansion. Moreover, it suffers from intense human persecution, as it is frequently killed on sight due to its striking resemblance to highly venomous pit vipers.
