Records of Turdus chiguanco anthracinus

Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

Large and conspicuous thrush approximately 25–30 cm in length. The male has an overall uniform dark brownish-black or smoky brown coloration, without any obvious gloss, with an orange or orange-yellow bill, yellowish to orange legs, and a more or less conspicuous yellow eye-ring. The female is similar, although with duller and browner tones. The underparts are usually somewhat paler, and the underwing coverts show reddish-chestnut tones. Juveniles are highly distinctive, with scaly plumage, a pale eyebrow, and a streaked or mottled chest and throat. The Argentine subspecies anthracinus has darker tones and a more intensely yellow eye-ring.

It may locally be confused with the Black-headed Thrush (Turdus nigriceps), whose male shows a marked contrast between the black head and gray back. Females are more similar, although the Chiguanco Thrush usually has a more uniform and less contrasting coloration on the chest and neck. It may also be confused with the Glossy-black Thrush (Turdus serranus), whose male has darker and glossier plumage. Both species prefer more heavily wooded and humid environments, where they usually remain concealed among the vegetation.

Geographic distribution: A species widely distributed along the Andes from Ecuador to west-central Argentina and northern and central Chile. Three subspecies are recognized: conradi, distributed in Ecuador and northern Peru; chiguanco, present in southern Peru, western Bolivia, and the extreme north of Chile; and anthracinus, corresponding to populations in central-southern Bolivia, much of Argentina, and parts of Chile. In Argentina, it occurs from Jujuy and Salta south to Chubut, with isolated populations in the Sierras Centrales of Córdoba and San Luis. There are also scattered records in the Pampas lowlands, the Littoral region, and more southern areas of Patagonia, whose nature has not yet been fully clarified. It is recorded from sea level to approximately 4,200 m above sea level, although in Argentina it is more frequent between 1,500 and 3,500 m. It exhibits altitudinal movements and some seasonal mobility in southern populations.

Habitat: It inhabits a wide variety of hilly and montane environments, mainly ravines, rocky areas, shrublands, open woodlands, cardón stands, alder forests, queñoa woodlands, and transitional areas with high-elevation grasslands. In northwestern Argentina, it is common in arid ravines, rocky high-elevation grasslands, intermontane valleys, and Puna environments, while in the Sierras Centrales it occupies the high-elevation Serrano Chaco and the grasslands and high-elevation woodlands of Pampa de Achala. In Patagonia, it is common in valleys, canyons, shrublands, and various areas of the Patagonian Steppe, including urban areas and modified environments.

Diet: It is an omnivorous species. It feeds mainly on earthworms, insects, spiders, and other arthropods, which it captures on the ground using short runs and hops. It also consumes fruits and berries, including cultivated fruits, and may occasionally be observed in small groups feeding in fruit trees.

Behavior: It is a relatively conspicuous and confiding species that is frequently observed in open areas. Although it may use wooded environments, it is also found walking through clearings, trails, and even streets in small towns, or perched on rocks, cardón cacti, posts, and fences. It generally occurs alone, in pairs, or in small groups. It has strongly terrestrial habits, moving in short runs and frequently raising its tail. During the breeding season, it vocalizes from exposed perches. Its song consists of a succession of melodious whistles interspersed with harsh notes and trills.

Nesting: It builds an open, cup-shaped nest made of twigs, plant fibers, mud, and moss, generally placed in shrubs, small trees, or dense vegetation at low to medium height. The clutch usually consists of two to four pale greenish-blue eggs with brown and gray markings. In Argentina, its nests are often parasitized by the Shiny Cowbird (Molothrus bonariensis).

Conservation status: The species is categorized as Not Threatened (NA) at the national level and Least Concern (LC) internationally. It is common or locally abundant across much of its range, tolerating modified environments relatively well and even showing expansion processes in some regions.
