Description


This is a small to medium-sized member of the Tyrannidae family, noted for its unique cranial structure and subtle yet diagnostic plumage coloration. It possesses an average body length of 13 to 14.5 centimeters and weighs between 13.5 and 17 grams. Its most prominent anatomical feature is a highly flattened, broad bill with a pale pinkish or flesh-colored lower mandible. The upperparts are covered in an overall dull olive-green plumage that extends across the crown, back, and wing coverts. The breast exhibits a light grayish or pale olive wash that transitions smoothly into a bright sulfur-yellow abdomen. On its head, a distinct dark grayish to blackish auricular patch is bordered by an interrupted yellowish-white eye-ring. The coloration of its iris exhibits notable geographic variation, ranging from pale grayish to a striking milky white depending on the specific subspecies, which serves as a highly reliable diagnostic feature in the field.

Geographical distribution: It features one of the most extensive geographical distributions within its genus throughout the Neotropics. Its range extends continuously from southern Mexico (including the Yucatán Peninsula, Veracruz, and Chiapas), south through both the Caribbean and Pacific slopes of Central America (including Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama), into South America. Within the South American continent, it is widely distributed east of the Andes, spanning through Colombia, Venezuela, the Guianas, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, almost the entirety of Brazil (excluding the extremely arid northeastern regions), Paraguay, Uruguay, and reaching its southernmost breeding limits in the northern provinces of Argentina.

Habitat: This passerine occupies a wide variety of forested ecosystems and semi-open woodland environments. It is particularly common in lowland humid forests, semi-deciduous woodlands, gallery forests bordering river corridors, mature second-growth forests, and forest edges. It is also frequently recorded in dense shrublands, shade-grown coffee plantations, and sandy coastal restinga vegetation in its easternmost range. While primarily associated with warm lowland regions, its altitudinal range is remarkably flexible, stretching from sea level up to approximately 2,000 meters in montane valleys and Andean foothills.

Feeding: Its diet is predominantly insectivorous, consisting of a diverse array of small invertebrates. Common prey items include beetles, hymenopterans (especially small ants and wasps), bugs, caterpillars, and various dipterans. It utilizes a highly active foraging technique known as sally-gleaning, where it performs quick, short flights to snatch insects directly from the undersides of leaves and twigs without perching. During periods of low insect abundance, it supplements its diet by consuming small berries and fleshy fruits, particularly from plants belonging to the Miconia and Ficus genera.

Behavior: It is a quiet and generally solitary bird, though it is frequently seen in pairs maintaining a permanent territory. It regularly participates in mixed-species foraging flocks, moving alongside other small passerines through the lower and middle strata of the forest canopy. When perched, it adopts a notably upright posture on shaded branches, occasionally displaying a distinctive wing-flicking motion to flush insects or communicate. It is most easily detected by its vocalizations, characterized by a sharp, buzzy, downward-slurring whistle repeated at regular intervals, primarily during the early morning hours.

Nesting: The breeding biology of this species is characterized by highly sophisticated nest architecture. It constructs a remarkable pendant, retort-shaped nest suspended from the tips of thin, drooping branches, often hanging over streams or forest pathways to deter terrestrial predators. The structure is built almost exclusively using dark vegetative fibers, rootlets, and the black thread-like rhizomorphs of the fungus genus Marasmius, giving the nest a messy, dark brown or blackish appearance. It features a downward-facing entrance tube on the side that leads up to a secure internal chamber. The female typically lays a clutch of 2 to 3 cream-white eggs finely speckled with reddish-brown spots concentrated near the larger end. While the female is solely responsible for incubation, the male actively assists in defending the nesting territory.

Conservation status: It is currently classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. This status is justified by its extremely large global range, high population density in many areas, and its ability to tolerate moderate levels of forest fragmentation and habitat alteration. However, localized populations in areas with high rates of deforestation and urban expansion face ongoing challenges due to the loss of mature forest canopies and native understory vegetation.
