The wings and tail present a striking contrast due to their outer edges being washed with a vibrant turquoise-blue or metallic greenish-blue sheen, which becomes highly conspicuous during flight. The iris is dark brown, and the bill is robust, slightly conical, and dark gray with a lighter base on the lower mandible. This taxon does not exhibit obvious sexual dimorphism; males and females are morphologically identical, although some females may present slightly duller tones. Juveniles are distinguished by having an overall dull olive-greenish plumage and lacking the characteristic blue reflection of mature adults.
Geographical distribution: Occurs widely across a vast territory in South America. Its geographic range extends from northeastern, central, and southern Brazil, westward through all of Paraguay and Bolivia, reaching northern and central Argentina (as far south as Buenos Aires and La Pampa provinces), and throughout Uruguay. Additionally, localized populations are recorded in southeastern Peru and marginally in border regions of adjacent countries. Habitat: Inhabits a broad variety of semi-open and anthropized ecosystems, demonstrating remarkable ecological plasticity. It is frequently found in secondary forests, savannas, semi-arid scrublands, forest edges, riparian woodlands, and agricultural areas. It has adapted extraordinarily well to human-modified environments and is a very common resident in urban parks, residential gardens, orchards, and suburban areas. It generally avoids dense, continuous, closed-canopy rainforests, preferring ecotones and fragmented landscapes.
Feeding: Possesses a highly omnivorous diet with a strong emphasis on frugivory. It consumes a wide array of fleshy fruits from both native and exotic plants, particularly those of the genera Ficus, Cecropia, and Solanum, as well as cultivated fruits such as guavas, oranges, papayas, and bananas. It supplements this diet with insects, caterpillars, spiders, and other small invertebrates collected by gleaning foliage or captured during brief, agile aerial sallies. It also feeds on flower nectar (especially from Fabaceae species) and tender leaf buds.
Behavior: Renowned for its highly active, noisy, and social nature. It is typically observed in pairs or small family groups, though it frequently joins mixed-species feeding flocks with other tanagers and small passerines. It maintains a constant vocal presence, emitting sharp chirps, rapid squeaks, and a squeaky but melodious song from high perches. Its flight is fast and undulating. It is a bold species that interacts confidently with human environments, regularly visiting artificial backyard feeders.
Nesting: Breeding occurs mainly during spring and summer, coinciding with peak food availability. The nest is a deep, compact cup constructed from fine plant fibers, rootlets, dry leaves, moss, and lichens, all bound together with spiderwebs for structural integrity. It is usually placed at medium to high levels, well-hidden within the dense foliage of a tree fork or occasionally on human structures. The female lays a clutch of 2 to 3 eggs, which are greenish-white or grayish, heavily speckled with dark brown and purplish spots. Incubation is performed primarily by the female for 12 to 14 days, while both parents actively cooperate in feeding and defending the nestlings, which fledge approximately two weeks after hatching.
Conservation status: Classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. This status is attributed to its exceptionally large geographic range, stable population trend, and high resilience to habitat modification. Rather than being threatened by human activities, forest fragmentation and urbanization have often facilitated the expansion of its populations.
