Description


Characterized by a slender yet robust silhouette, this medium-sized passerine measures approximately 17 to 19 centimeters in length and weighs between 32 and 45 grams. The plumage is predominantly a dull, olive-green or somber grayish-green hue, which exhibits subtle yellowish-olive iridescent highlights under direct sunlight, particularly on the crown and breast. The flight feathers of the wings and tail are a contrasting dark blackish-brown, highlighted by a distinctive pale yellow or whitish wing bar at the base of the primaries, which is highly visible both at rest and in flight. The bill is short, stout, and slate-black, adapted for a generalist diet. Sexual dimorphism is virtually absent, making males and females indistinguishable by plumage, whereas juveniles display a duller coloration overall, lacking the characteristic olive gloss of mature individuals.

Geographical distribution: Occupies a vast geographic range throughout the Neotropics, extending from southern Central America in Nicaragua and Costa Rica through Panama into extensive portions of South America. It is widely distributed east of the Andes, spanning through Colombia, Venezuela, the Guianas, Trinidad and Tobago, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay, and across most of Brazil, reaching the northernmost regions of Argentina.

Habitat: Primarily inhabits semi-open areas, humid forest borders, agricultural landscapes, plantations, urban parks, and residential gardens. It shares a strong ecological association with various genera of palm trees (such as Mauritia and Euterpe), which provide critical foraging resources and nesting sites. The species is highly adaptable to habitat degradation, successfully colonizing suburban and anthropized environments as long as scattered mature trees remain.

Feeding: Functions as an opportunistic omnivore with a diet heavy in both fruits and insects. It feeds extensively on wild fruits, berries, and the small drupes of various palms, supplementing this intake with nectar from tubular flowers. It also actively hunts for invertebrates, including caterpillars, beetles, and spiders, which it gleans from the undersides of leaves, searches for on bark surfaces, or captures in mid-air through short, agile aerial sallies.

Behavior: Renowned for being an active, noisy, and highly social bird. It is commonly observed traveling in pairs or small family groups, and frequently joins mixed-species foraging flocks alongside other tanagers and honeycreepers. Its vocalizations consist of a series of squeaky, high-pitched, and hurried notes used for territorial defense and group contact. It spends most of its active hours in the canopy and sub-canopy layers, hopping nimbly among branches.

Nesting: Constructs a bulky, deep, cup-shaped nest utilizing dry leaves, plant fibers, moss, and fine rootlets. This nest is typically placed at a high elevation, well-concealed at the crown of large palm trees or within human-made structures such as building eaves and rooftops. The female lays a clutch of two to three eggs, which are creamy-white or pale buff, heavily speckled with reddish-brown spots. Incubation is performed chiefly by the female for about 13 to 14 days, after which both parents actively participate in feeding and protecting the chicks until they fledge roughly three weeks after hatching.

Conservation status: Classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. The global population is currently stable, owing to its immense geographic distribution and its capacity to thrive in fragmented forests and urbanized zones, which have inadvertently expanded its suitable foraging areas.
