The integument is notably rough, covered with prominent conical tubercles aligned in longitudinal rows across the dorsum and flanks. Its coloration is highly versatile due to physiological color change capabilities, shifting dynamically from grayish, brownish, and dark charcoal shades to pale, almost translucent tones depending on ambient temperature, light levels, and emotional state. The ventral surface is contrasting, showing a creamy-white or light yellow coloration. The head is large, triangular, and distinct from the neck, featuring prominent lidless eyes with a vertical pupil adapted for nocturnal vision and a golden or grayish iris. Each limb is short and muscular, terminating in five clawless or partially clawed digits equipped with undivided subdigital lamellae that generate van der Waals forces, allowing the animal to scale vertical walls; notably, claws are only present on the third and fourth digits of each foot.
Geographical distribution: This species is natively distributed throughout the Mediterranean Basin, encompassing Southern Europe (including the Iberian Peninsula, southern France, Italy, coastal Croatia, and Greece), Northern Africa (spanning from Morocco eastward to Egypt), and numerous Mediterranean islands such as the Balearic Islands, Corsica, Sardinia, Sicily, and Crete. Furthermore, due to accidental anthropogenic transport via shipping routes, it has successfully established introduced populations in the Atlantic archipelagos of Madeira and the Azores, as well as in several urban centers in South America (including Argentina, Uruguay, and Chile) and localized areas of the United States (such as California and Florida), where it acts as an exotic colonizer.
Habitat: It thrives in warm, temperate zones, exhibiting a strong preference for xerophytic and rocky environments. In natural landscapes, it is regularly found on cliffs, rocky outcrops, stone walls, and old tree trunks. However, it is an extremely synanthropic organism, having adapted remarkably well to human-modified landscapes where it frequently colonizes stone walls, building facades, archaeological ruins, highway overpasses, and domestic gardens. It tolerates significant human disturbance, requiring only adequate crevice-like shelters for thermoregulation and predator avoidance.
Feeding: The diet is strictly insectivorous and highly opportunistic, consisting of a wide range of terrestrial arthropods. Primary prey items include moths, flies, mosquitoes, beetles, crickets, spiders, and centipedes. The species employs a sit-and-wait foraging strategy, often positioning itself motionless near artificial light sources on buildings to intercept insects attracted to the light. Large adult individuals are also known to exhibit facultative cannibalism, occasionally preying on smaller geckos, including juveniles of their own species or other sympatric lizards.
Behavior: It exhibits predominantly crepuscular and nocturnal activity patterns, although during cooler seasons it frequently engages in diurnal heliothermy, basking in direct sunlight to raise its body temperature. It is highly territorial, defending hunting grounds and shelters from rivals through aggressive posturing and the emission of loud vocal squeaks and clicks. When threatened, it utilizes caudal autotomy, shedding its tail to distract predators, which eventually regenerates as a smoother, cartilaginous structure. Its climbing locomotion is exceptionally efficient on almost any surface due to its specialized subdigital adhesive system.
Reproduction: The reproductive cycle is highly dependent on seasonal temperatures, occurring primarily during the spring and summer months. During courtship, males initiate contact by making clicking sounds and grasping the female’s neck with their jaws before mating. This is an oviparous species, with females producing two to three clutches per season, each consisting of one or two hard-shelled calcareous eggs measuring approximately 10 to 12 millimeters. These eggs are carefully hidden in deep rock crevices, under bark, or within cracks in human buildings; communal nesting sites where multiple females deposit eggs together are very common. The incubation period varies extensively from 50 to 120 days depending on the microclimatic temperature, producing hatchlings that measure 2 to 3 centimeters in snout-vent length.
Conservation status: Listed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, this species is highly resilient, with stable global populations. It faces no major threats, as urban expansion generally benefits the species by providing abundant roosting opportunities and a reliable supply of insect prey attracted to artificial lights.
