Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

This slender-bodied bird is a medium-sized representative of its family, measuring between 10 to 12 inches (26 to 30 centimeters) in total length and weighing approximately 40 to 55 grams. The plumage is characterized by a sandy-brown upperpart heavily streaked with black and dark brown, providing excellent camouflage within thorny scrub. The underparts are mostly unmarked, displaying a buffish-white or pale cream coloration. A highly diagnostic feature is its prominent, erectile rufous-and-black crest which is raised frequently when the bird is alarmed or actively calling. It possesses a short, sturdy, decurved bill, a pale yellow orbital ring around a brownish-yellow iris, and a long, graduated tail that is constantly cocked or swung in a diagnostic manner.

Geographical distribution: This Neotropical species exhibits a vast range that extends from southern Mexico down through Central America to South America. East of the Andes, it is widely distributed across Colombia, Venezuela, the Guianas, Brazil, Paraguay, and Bolivia, reaching its southern breeding limits in central Argentina and Uruguay. While northern and equatorial populations are largely sedentary, the southernmost populations undergo seasonal migrations during the austral winter, moving north toward warmer tropical latitudes.

Habitat: It primarily frequents open and semi-open landscapes, showing a strong preference for shrubby savannas, overgrown pastures, secondary growth, agricultural edges, and riparian scrublands. It strictly avoids dense, continuous mature forest canopies such as those found in the heart of the Amazon basin, thriving instead in disturbed anthropogenic habitats and forest-edge ecotones.

Feeding: The diet is predominantly insectivorous, focusing heavily on large terrestrial arthropods. It feeds on a wide range of caterpillars (including highly toxic, hairy species), grasshoppers, crickets, beetles, mantises, and spiders. It typically searches for prey on or near the ground, moving stealthily through dense grass or low branches, and capturing targets with quick terrestrial lunges or short sally-strikes.

Behavior: Known for being a highly secretive and solitary species, it is far more frequently detected by its voice than by sight. Its presence is betrayed by a persistent, melancholic, two-note whistle, often described as a clear "cris-pin" sound, which can be repeated for hours from a hidden perch within thick foliage. When singing, the bird dynamically erects its crest, droops its wings, and swings its long tail. It has a low, jerky, and undulating flight pattern when crossing open spaces between dense thickets.

Nesting: This species is an obligate brood parasite, meaning it does not build its own nest or participate in rearing its young. Females target the large, enclosed dome-shaped stick nests constructed by various spinetails and thornbirds in the family Furnariidae, such as those in the genera Synallaxis and Phacellodomus. The female sneaks into the host nest and deposits a single bluish-white or white egg, often puncturing or removing some host eggs in the process. The cuckoo nestling hatches rapidly and utilizes specialized, sharp mandibular hooks to kill or eject host nestlings, securing the undivided attention and parental care of the host adults.

Conservation status: It is evaluated as a species of Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. Due to its massive geographic range, stable population trend, and ability to thrive in and even colonize human-modified landscapes resulting from deforestation, it faces no immediate major conservation threats.
