Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

This is a small, compact passerine bird belonging to the Thraupidae family, characterized by a striking sexual dimorphism and a robust yet small-sized bill structure. Adult individuals of this taxon reach a body length of 10 to 11 centimeters and weigh between 8 and 11 grams. The adult male displays a highly contrasting plumage pattern, featuring a glossy black hood over the head and back, interrupted by a highly distinctive white median stripe on the crown, and broad white malar streaks resembling a mustache. The breast and belly are completely pure white, whereas the bill is short, thick, and conical, perfectly adapted for husking seeds. In stark contrast, the female exhibits a drab, cryptic coloration, with uniform olive-brown upperparts and a lighter, pale yellowish or buff coloration on the underparts. Juveniles resemble the adult female in appearance before they undergo their post-juvenile molt to obtain the definitive male plumage.

Geographical distribution: This species has an extensive distribution range across South America, being native to Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, Bolivia, Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, and the Guianas. It is a highly migratory bird with intricate seasonal movement patterns; it breeds in the temperate and subtropical grasslands of central, southern, and eastern Brazil, northern Argentina, and Paraguay during the southern hemisphere´s spring and summer. With the arrival of the austral winter, populations migrate northward towards the Amazon basin, northern South America, and the Orinoco llanos in Venezuela, functioning as a highly dynamic intratropical migrant.

Habitat: It predominantly inhabits open and semi-open lowland environments. Its preferred areas include native grasslands, shrubby savannas, agricultural crop fields, secondary forest edges, disturbed scrublands, and wet grassy clearings near water bodies. It completely avoids dense, closed-canopy primary forests, favoring instead early-successional habitats or anthropogenically modified landscapes where grass seeds are abundant and low shrubby cover is available for nesting and protection.

Feeding: It is a specialized granivorous bird, with a diet almost exclusively consisting of seeds from herbaceous plants, showing a pronounced preference for the Poaceae (grass) family. To feed, it frequently perches directly on seed heads of tall grass species, using its specialized conical bill to husk and extract the grains. During the breeding season, it may supplement its nutritional intake with small insects and spiders, which provide essential proteins for the fast development of the nestlings.

Behavior: This active and highly social passerine flies with a characteristic rapid and undulating motion. Outside of the breeding season, it forms large, nomadic flocks, often associating with other seedeaters of the genus Sporophila to forage in areas with high seed abundance. Males are renowned for their highly complex, melodious, and high-pitched song, which they use extensively for territorial defense and courtship. Additionally, they exhibit remarkable vocal mimicry, frequently incorporating the calls and song elements of other sympatric bird species into their own vocal repertoire.

Nesting: During the breeding cycle, pairs become highly territorial and defend their nesting sites. The female alone constructs a delicate, cup-shaped nest which is thin-walled and often semi-translucent. It is woven from fine rootlets, dry grass fibers, and securely bound with spiderwebs to the branches of low shrubs or small trees, typically at a height of 1 to 3 meters above the ground. The female lays a clutch of 2 to 3 eggs, which are white or pale greenish-white, heavily speckled with dark brown and grey markings. Incubation is carried out solely by the female for 12 to 13 days, while both parents actively participate in feeding and brooding the nestlings, which fledge approximately ten days after hatching.

Conservation status: It is currently classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Although its populations are stable and its range is extensive, it faces localized threats due to habitat degradation caused by intensive agriculture and pasture burning. Furthermore, it is subject to severe pressure from illegal poaching for the pet trade, as males are highly sought after by collectors and songbird enthusiasts due to their exceptional singing abilities.
