Sporophila leucoptera leucoptera

Exhibits a compact body structure and pronounced sexual dimorphism characteristic of its genus. This small passerine measures between 12 and 13 centimeters in length and weighs approximately 15 grams. Adult males display a striking plumage, characterized by deep slate-gray to bluish-gray upperparts and completely bright white underparts, extending from the throat down to the undertail coverts. A key diagnostic feature is the small white wing speculum visible at the base of the primary feathers. The bill is robust, conical, and dark grey. Females, in contrast, feature highly cryptic olive-brown upperparts and warm buffy-yellowish underparts, designed for optimal camouflage within dense grassy habitats. Juveniles resemble adult females before acquiring their mature plumage.

Geographical distribution: Is widely distributed across central-eastern South America. Its range encompasses vast regions of Brazil, particularly throughout the Northeast, Center-West, Southeast, and parts of the Southern regions. It is also native to eastern Bolivia, central and eastern Paraguay, and reaches its southern breeding limit in northeastern Argentina, specifically within the wet grasslands of riverside provinces such as Formosa, Chaco, and Corrientes.

Habitat: Is closely associated with aquatic and semi-aquatic landscapes, including wetlands, seasonally flooded grasslands, marsh edges, reed beds, and riparian corridors. It shows a strong ecological preference for areas dominated by tall grasses and sedges adjacent to slow-moving rivers or lagoons, generally avoiding continuous closed-canopy forest structures.

Feeding: Sustains itself primarily through a granivorous diet. It feeds extensively on the seeds of various grasses belonging to the Poaceae and Cyperaceae families, specialized in clinging directly to vertical grass stems to harvest mature seeds. During the breeding season, this grass-based diet is supplemented with small invertebrates, such as insects and larvae, which provide crucial protein essential for the development of their fast-growing young.

Behavior: Is known for its active nature and the sweet, melodic, and highly complex song of the males, which is delivered from elevated, exposed perches to establish nesting territories. During the non-breeding season, it transitions to a highly gregarious lifestyle, joining mixed-species flocks with other Sporophila species to undertake local nomadic movements in response to seed availability in humid plains.

Nesting: Occurs during the rainy season when food resources are highly abundant. The female constructs a delicate yet resilient deep cup-shaped nest woven from fine plant fibers and rootlets, secured with spiderwebs for structural flexibility. The nest is typically hidden low in shrubs or dense marsh vegetation. A clutch consists of 2 to 3 pale greenish-white eggs speckled with dark brown spots. Incubation lasts around 12 to 13 days, performed solely by the female, while both parents share the responsibility of feeding the nestlings until they fledge.

Conservation status: Is currently listed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. Although the global population is considered stable, local populations are increasingly threatened by habitat fragmentation caused by wetland drainage for agriculture, as well as illegal trapping for the wild songbird pet trade due to its highly prized vocalization.
