Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description: Crown and back are lead-colored, with black wings and a white wing band, black tail, rump, and ventral area. Some individuals have a darker ventral side, which can make them resemble the Brown Capuchino (Sporophila hypochroma), complicating identification. The female is olive green dorsally, contrasted with a lighter ventral area, indistinguishable from most females of other Sporophila species.

Morph: See Sporophila ´uruguaya´.

Geographical Distribution in Argentina: Misiones, Corrientes, Formosa, Chaco, Córdoba, Santa Fe, Entre Ríos, and Buenos Aires.

Habitat: Grasslands and crops.

Diet: Seeds.

Behavior: Territorial. A melodious song composed of several sweet whistles, very pleasant to the ear.

Nesting: A delicate hemisphere-shaped nest made of plant material.
