Conservation status: Least Concern

Description

A medium-sized arboreal rodent characterized by a head-body length of 15 to 20 centimeters and a bushy tail measuring between 14 and 18 centimeters. The body mass typically ranges from 150 to 250 grams. Its dorsal pelage exhibits an olive-brown coloration, densely grizzled with yellow or grey tones, providing excellent camouflage within the forest canopy. The underparts are lighter, ranging from buffy-yellow to pale orange shades. Its tail is remarkably thick and bushy, displaying dark brown or blackish hues with white-tipped hairs that create a frosted effect. The large, dark eyes are highlighted by a distinct, pale cream-colored ocular ring.

Geographical distribution: This species is widely distributed across northern and central South America. Its geographical range mainly covers northeastern Brazil, stretching across much of the Amazon basin, as well as French Guiana, Suriname, Guyana, eastern Venezuela, and the eastern regions of Colombia. It is an endemic element of these neotropical ecosystems, occurring from sea level up to elevations exceeding 2,000 meters along the Andean and Guianan montane foothills.

Habitat: It primarily inhabits tropical rainforests, both primary and secondary, gallery forests, and transitional woodland zones. The species demonstrates remarkable ecological plasticity, allowing it to adapt to agricultural landscapes such as cacao and coconut plantations, as well as degraded forest fragments and suburban parks with mature tree cover. It requires structurally complex forests with continuous canopy and an abundance of epiphytes and lianas, which facilitate aerial locomotion and provide refuge from predators.

Feeding: It exhibits an omnivorous diet with a strong frugivorous and granivorous preference. It mainly feeds on hard seeds and nuts, possessing specialized dentition to gnaw through the tough endocarps of palms from the genera Attalea and Astrocaryum. Its opportunistic feeding habits also include soft fruits, fungi, tree bark, tender shoots, and animal protein such as insects, larvae, small vertebrates, and occasionally, wild bird eggs.

Behavior: This rodent is strictly diurnal and highly arboreal. Its peak activity occurs during the early morning and late afternoon hours. It is an exceptional acrobat, moving with extreme speed and agility through the branches and performing daring leaps between trees. Although generally solitary, individuals may tolerate the presence of conspecifics in fruiting trees with abundant food resources. It utilizes a diverse repertoire of high-pitched chatters and chirping vocalizations to establish territories and warn of potential predators.

Reproduction: Breeding occurs throughout the year, with peaks often synchronized with local fruit abundance. The gestation period lasts approximately 40 to 45 days, after which the female gives birth to a litter of 1 to 3 young. Parturition takes place in tree hollows or spherical nests constructed of twigs, leaves, and moss high in the forest canopy. The offspring are born hairless and blind, relying entirely on maternal care during their initial weeks of development.

Conservation status: The species is classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. While its overall population remains stable across its extensive range, it faces threats from habitat loss due to deforestation, agricultural expansion, livestock grazing, and hunting pressure in specific regions. These impacts can fragment populations, isolating them in small forest patches vulnerable to genetic degradation and localized extinction.
