Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

This medium-sized passerine bird, belonging to the Thraupidae family, averages 20.5 to 21 centimeters in length and weighs between 36 and 54 grams. It features a striking olive-green mantle and back, contrasted by a slate-gray crown and nape. A prominent, long white superciliary stripe runs from the base of its heavy bill past the eye, while a distinct black malar stripe borders its clean white throat. The underparts display a blend of buffy-ochraceous and gray tones, becoming warmer toward the vent. Its robust, thick black bill is designed for crushing plant matter. Sexual dimorphism is virtually nonexistent, with both males and females sharing identical plumage.

Geographical distribution: This species is widely distributed across central and southern South America. Its geographic range extends from eastern Brazil (ranging from Bahia and Mato Grosso down to Rio Grande do Sul), through eastern Bolivia, northern and eastern Paraguay, down to northern Uruguay and northeastern Argentina (including the provinces of Misiones, Corrientes, and Formosa). It is primarily a sedentary species, showing no significant migratory movements.

Habitat: It primarily inhabits semi-open environments, including forest edges, secondary growth woodlands, humid forest borders, dense scrublands, and suburban parks. Although it utilizes suburban gardens, it requires dense shrubbery and scattered tall trees for foraging and shelter. It avoids deep, closed-canopy primary forests as well as barren, high-altitude regions, preferring instead the ecotones between forests and open fields.

Feeding: It maintains an omnivorous and frugivorous diet, relying heavily on plant matter. It feeds on various wild and cultivated fruits, flower buds, leaves, nectar, and seeds. During the breeding season, it incorporates a significant portion of animal protein into its diet, foraging for invertebrates such as beetles, caterpillars, grasshoppers, and spiders to fulfill the nutritional requirements of its developing chicks.

Behavior: It is renowned for its vocal prowess, delivering a loud, melodious, and highly repetitive song from prominent, high perches to mark territory. It is generally found singly or in territorial pairs, rarely joining multi-species flocks. It exhibits strong territorial defense during the breeding season, actively chasing away intruders and communicating through complex vocal interactions.

Nesting: The breeding cycle begins with the construction of a sturdy, open cup-shaped nest, built from twigs, dried grass, roots, and leaves. This structure is typically concealed in thick foliage or low bushes, usually 1 to 3 meters above the ground. The female lays two to three bluish-green eggs decorated with dark brown or black spots and hair-like streaks at the larger end. Incubation lasts approximately 13 to 14 days and is performed mainly by the female, although both parents actively participate in brooding and feeding the nestlings until they fledge.

Conservation status: It is classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List due to its extensive distribution range and stable population trends. However, the species is heavily targeted by illegal wildlife trafficking for the pet trade, especially in Brazil, where its song makes it a highly coveted cage bird. Habitat fragmentation due to agricultural expansion also poses localized threats.
