Conservation status according to BirdLife International: Least Concern

Description

Exhibits a stout and robust body silhouette, measuring between 15 and 17 inches (39 to 44 centimeters) in length and weighing approximately 1.5 to 2.3 pounds (700 to 1040 grams). The plumage is predominantly characterized by a blend of grayish-brown and buff tones, extensively barred with black on the back and flanks. Its most distinctive morphological feature is the bright rufous-cinnamon color of the primary wing feathers, which becomes highly visible during its brief and explosive flights. It has a relatively long, slightly decurved bill, a dark crown that can be raised as a small crest when threatened or alert, and sturdy legs adapted for cursorial movement.

Geographical distribution: Occurs widely across central and eastern South America. Its geographic range encompasses a significant portion of Brazil (mainly the northeast, central, and southern regions), eastern Bolivia, the entirety of Paraguay and Uruguay, and northern to central Argentina, extending south into the Pampas provinces.

Habitat: Primarily inhabits open lowland ecosystems, including temperate grasslands, Cerrado savannas, open shrubby steppes, and agricultural fields with tall herbaceous vegetation. It strictly avoids dense humid forests and closed tropical rainforests, favoring habitats where grass cover offers protection from aerial predators while allowing rapid running maneuvers.

Feeding: Has an opportunistic omnivorous diet that fluctuates depending on seasonal availability. During the warmer months, it consumes a large quantity of animal matter, including insects such as grasshoppers, beetles, and caterpillars, as well as small vertebrates like lizards and frogs. In winter, its diet shifts toward vegetable items, consuming seeds, grains, roots, tubers, and tender shoots, which it uncovers by probing and digging into the soil with its powerful bill.

Behavior: Displays terrestrial and solitary habits, though it may occasionally be seen in pairs during the breeding season. When threatened, it prefers to run rapidly through dense vegetation to seek cover rather than fly, initiating a loud, heavy, and short-distance flight only as a last resort. It possesses a distinctive vocalization consisting of a loud, clear, three-syllabled whistle, emitted primarily during dawn and dusk to establish and defend territories.

Nesting: Exhibits a complex mating system characterized by sequential polyandry, where females mate with multiple males during a single breeding season. The nest is a simple, shallow scrape on the ground, well-hidden under thick tufts of grass and lined with dry leaves and twigs. The female lays a clutch of 4 to 10 eggs that feature a brilliant, glossy deep purple or wine color. The male takes sole responsibility for the incubation period, which lasts approximately 19 to 21 days, as well as the subsequent rearing and protection of the precocial chicks.

Conservation status: Classified globally as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List due to its vast geographical range. However, local populations face severe pressure from habitat loss driven by agricultural expansion, intensive use of pesticides, and illegal hunting, leading to noticeable population declines in several regions of the Southern Cone.
