Description

This is a medium-sized passerine measuring approximately 15 to 16.5 centimeters in total length. It displays a highly characteristic facial pattern, featuring a distinctive chestnut crown divided longitudinally by a narrow, pale grey median stripe. It is recognized by a clear grey supercilium, blackish lores, and a dark postocular stripe. Its cheeks are predominantly grey, contrasting sharply with a white throat bordered by prominent black malar streaks. The upperparts of Rhynchospiza strigiceps are greyish-brown, heavily streaked with black, while the underparts are mostly off-white, fading into a soft buffy-ochre tone on the flanks. Its bill is robust and dark grey, perfectly adapted for cracking seeds of various wild grasses.

Geographical distribution: This species is endemic to the southern cone of South America, primarily restricted to the Gran Chaco biome. Its range encompasses northern and central Argentina (extending from Salta and Formosa south to San Luis and Córdoba), western Paraguay, and the southeastern tip of Bolivia. It is largely sedentary, though some southern populations may perform local seasonal movements northward during the harsh austral winter months in search of milder weather and more abundant food resources.

Habitat: It primarily inhabits dry Chaco woodlands, characterized by xerophytic vegetation, thorny shrublands, and semi-arid savanna-like environments. It prefers transitional zones, forest edges, and areas with dense, tangled undergrowth. It can also be found in degraded agricultural lands and old pastures with scattered low bushes, avoiding dense humid forests and heavily urbanized areas, which restricts its adaptability to fully anthropogenic landscapes.

Feeding: It maintains an omnivorous diet, with a strong preference for seeds during the non-breeding season. It actively searches the ground for grass seeds and other herbaceous plant material. During the breeding season, its diet shifts to include a substantial amount of animal protein, feeding on various small invertebrates such as beetles, ants, caterpillars, and spiders, which it gleans from leaf litter and the dry base of shrubs.

Behavior: It is a primarily terrestrial and secretive bird that spends most of its time on the ground. When threatened, it prefers to run rapidly through the dense undergrowth rather than taking flight. It is usually observed singly or in pairs. Males are highly vocal during the spring, singing a melodious, metallic, and repetitive song from low perches in thorny bushes to establish and defend their territories.

Nesting: It constructs a well-concealed, cup-shaped nest located on or very near the ground, hidden amidst thick grass tussocks or at the base of thorny shrubs. The nest is woven using dry grasses, roots, and plant fibers, lined with finer materials. The female typically lays 3 to 4 eggs, which are pure white. Incubation lasts about 12 to 14 days, with both parents sharing the duties of incubating the eggs and feeding the altricial nestlings until they fledge.

Conservation status: It is currently classified as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. Although it is not globally threatened and holds stable populations in several protected reserves, local populations face significant pressure due to habitat loss and fragmentation driven by agricultural expansion, particularly intensive cattle ranching and large-scale soy cultivation, which threaten the long-term integrity of the dry Chaco forests.
