Is a majestic, flightless ratite native to the South American continent, distinguished as the largest bird in the Western Hemisphere. Adult individuals of Rhea americana typically stand between 4 and 5 feet (1.2 to 1.5 meters) tall and weigh between 44 and 77 pounds (20 to 35 kilograms), with males being notably larger and heavier than females. The loose-textured, voluminous plumage consists of slate-gray and brownish feathers, contrasted by a lighter whitish underbelly and a conspicuous black collar-like patch at the base of the neck and upper chest that darkens during the breeding period. Lacking a keeled sternum, this species is anatomically unable to fly, but it possesses large, soft wings used as rudders for balance during swift maneuvers. Its long, muscular, featherless lower legs terminate in three strong toes armed with robust claws, an evolutionary adaptation for rapid terrestrial movement.
Geographical distribution: Extends throughout the vast plains of southern and central South America, including major portions of Argentina, central and southern Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, and southeastern Bolivia. Its populations are highly concentrated within key ecological zones such as the Pampas grasslands, the dry and humid forests of the Gran Chaco, and the seasonally flooded plains of the Pantanal. Although historically widespread, modern agricultural expansion has fragmented its distribution, resulting in localized and isolated populations across its native range.
Habitat: Shows a clear preference for open, flat, or gently undulating landscapes dominated by low vegetation, such as temperate grasslands, shrubby savannas, semi-arid steppes, and pasturelands. It avoids dense, closed-canopy forests and tropical rainforests, as dense woodlands impede its running capacity and severely restrict its long-range field of vision, which is crucial for early predator detection. However, it adapts reasonably well to low-intensity agricultural lands, crop fields, and cattle ranches that maintain adequate brush cover for shelter.
Feeding: Exhibits a highly versatile, omnivorous diet with a strong emphasis on plant material. It regularly grazes on broad-leafed plants, agricultural crops, seeds, fruits, and roots. This vegetative diet is supplemented by animal protein, including substantial quantities of invertebrates like grasshoppers, beetles, and locusts, alongside small vertebrates such as lizards, frogs, small rodents, and occasionally small snakes. Lacking teeth to masticate food, it swallows pebbles and small stones (gastroliths) to facilitate the mechanical breakdown of fibrous organic material within its muscular gizzard.
Behavior: Maintains a highly gregarious lifestyle during the non-breeding season, congregating in loose, social flocks of 10 to over 50 individuals consisting of females, juveniles, and subadult males. Equipped with exceptional eyesight and acute hearing, it is highly alert; when detecting danger, it either squats flat against the grass to camouflage itself or flees at remarkable speeds of up to 37 mph (60 km/h) in a zigzag pattern. During the onset of the breeding season, these flocks disband as mature males become solitary, highly territorial, and aggressive, emitting low-frequency, booming vocalizations to ward off rivals and attract potential mates.
Nesting: Operates on a complex, polygynandrous mating system where a single dominant male coordinates with a harem of several females. The male initiates the cycle by scraping a shallow depression in the soil, lining it with dry grass and twigs to construct a communal nest. Multiple females then deposit their eggs into this single nest, resulting in clutches that range from 20 to 50 large, golden-yellow eggs, which gradually bleach to a pale cream color. The male assumes sole responsibility for incubating the clutch for a period of 35 to 40 days and subsequently defends and guides the newly hatched chicks with extreme aggression against any perceived threat for several months.
Conservation status: Classified as Near Threatened (NT) on the IUCN Red List. The most critical pressures threatening wild populations of this bird include habitat loss and fragmentation caused by intensive agriculture and livestock grazing, illegal hunting for meat, leather, and decorative feathers, and the widespread destruction of communal nests by agricultural machinery or feral predators.
